New Broadcaster Secures Rights To 20 Premier League Games

The amount Amazon paid to secure exclusive Premier League footage has yet to be disclosed.

The SVOD service has bought the rights to 20 matches per season between 2019-2022, although it's thought that the company managed to get them at a knock-down price after Sky and BT bought the majority of games in February.

From 2019, you'll be able to watch 20 of the Premier League's matches live on Amazon Prime Video, bringing the total number of broadcasters showing the league's matches up to a total of three including Sky and BT.

It has now been confirmed that the United States company has bought one of those packages, with BT taking the other.

"We know that Sky Sports and BT Sport will continue to provide fantastic live-match broadcasts and programming for fans across the country, and we welcome Premier Sports as a new partner".

Amazon, which started as an online retailer, has built up an increasingly impressive sports portfolio and broadcasts the US Open tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events - where they outbid Sky by offering £50 million - and National Football League games.

The revenue from British rights is not distributed entirely on an equal basis with clubs given more according to league position and also the amount of times they feature on live broadcasts.

Amazon has secured the rights to show English Premier League football matches for the first time in further evidence of their financial might in the bidding wars for sports events, the league said Thursday.

The Premier League have confirmed that worldwide revenue is set to be distributed based on league finish, with the ratio rising from 1.6.1 to 1.8.1. It will see Amazon show two full rounds of fixtures a season, one on a bank holiday and another during the week.

A fraught divide between the clubs in recent years had centred on leading clubs demanding a greater share of the worldwide revenue stream. The only problem is that most of those companies failed to take the Premier League's bait. However, the entire auction has fallen short of the Premier League's hopes on revenue.

The breakdown of that is that Sky Sports Entertainment with Sky Sports Premier League added costs £38 a month, plus a one-off cost of £20. The infrastructure and market potential needs testing and this gives Amazon an early mover advantage.

For customers it means an additional subscription should they want to consume everything. Sky took four of the best five, for £3.75bn and a 14% discount on its current deal.

Will it spread the existing market more thinly?
