Sweden beats South Korea with VAR penalty

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be at the World Cup after retiring from international football

Sweden, who knocked out Italy in the playoffs to reach Russian Federation 2018, had chances to go ahead before Granqvist's 65th-minute penalty but were denied by a brilliant goalkeeping display by Kim Seungguy. "I think he probably tore it", Shin said after the game. I think we just defended well and we feel if we counter better we can score goals.

Joel Aguilar had initially dismissed Swedish pleas for a second-half spot-kick, but for the second time in this tournament VAR came into play and after reviewing Kim Minwoo's tackle on Viktor Claesson the referee deemed it was a foul. But he changed his mind after taking another look, deciding Kim had tripped Claesson as he tried to clear the ball in a sliding tackle.

"It takes a while with the VAR but we're very pleased we had it today".

South Korea is one of the weakest teams in the FIFA World Cup 2018, and their recent record is particularly poor.

The result means South Korea will have to beat either Mexico in their next game or Germany in their Group F finale to have a chance to advance, and Son admitted he expected tougher tests than what Sweden offered on Monday.

Sweden picked up the three points, but it wasn't a display that instilled confidence, although perhaps being more on the back foot against Germany and Mexico may suit them.

Andersson says the 36-year-old is now firmly out of the picture when it comes to Sweden's plans and has not had any involvement at any stage of the build-up to Monday's match in Nizhny Novgorod.

Cho then stood firm to keep out Berg's effort from close range in the best chance of a first half that never truly got going, as Sweden's inability to convert - three goals in seven games prior to this one - threatened to haunt them.

South Korea had barely threatened, but Hwang Hee-chan missed a gilt-edged chance when he headed wide in extra-time.

It wasn't a flowing performance from Sweden, but securing the win will come as a huge relief to coach Janne Andersson and his team.

A victory for either side would leave them well placed in the group after Mexico shocked Germany on Sunday.

Make no mistake, this was a huge win for Sweden in a game that will not live long in the memory, although it was decided by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Jo was South Korea's starting goalkeeper at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, which was somewhat of a surprise decision by head coach Shin Tae-yong.

Sweden had been accused of spying on a Korea training session ahead of the game.

Korea Republic pushed hard to find a way back into the game, but to no avail. "We have worked a little bit more on our attack now in the last few days and I hope that tomorrow it will work and we will score".
