Beijing's coded message of support for denuclearisation

Hush-hush meet North Korea's Kim Jong Un lands in Beijing for two-day visit reports Chinese media

Trump declared the threat of a nuclear North Korea had ended June 13, following his summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Cold War-era allies, which fought side-by-side against US-led United Nations forces and South Korea in the 1950-1953 Korean War, have sought to fix ties strained by Pyongyang's nuclear tests and Beijing's support of subsequent United Nations sanctions.

"The United States is ready, willing, and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary".

"Our government hopes that the June 12 summit agreements between North Korea and the USA, including the repatriation of US soldier remains, will be implemented swiftly to achieve the goals of completely denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and establishing a peace regime", the ministry's spokesman Noh Kyu-duk said at a press briefing.

North Korea has previously demanded it will not agree to family reunions unless Seoul returns several of its citizens, including a group of waitresses who defected from a restaurant in China.

Trump undoubtedly was referencing North Korea's demolition in late May of a nuclear test site at Punggye-ri in a remote area in the northeastern part of the country.

Agreements between the two leaders were being carried out "one-by-one", it said.

North Korea has rejected unilateral nuclear disarmament.

It was reported to have been established in 2008 and has research facilities nearby for missile development as well as a tower that can support ballistic missiles.

In South Korea, hopeful participants are picked at random by a computer which takes into account their age and family background.

KCNA said that during a banquet hosted by Xi, Kim also said Pyongyang and Beijing are seeing their ties develop into "unprecedentedly special relations".

China and the USA are not the only stakeholders eyeing the economic development of North Korea. It also conducted its sixth nuclear test. North Korea may also worry that its citizens will become influenced by the much more affluent South, which could loosen the government's grip on power.

Punggye-ri has been the staging ground for all 6 of the North's nuclear tests, including the latest and by far most powerful one in September past year which Pyongyang said was an H-bomb.

About 7,700 U.S. military personnel remain unaccounted from the 1950-1953 Korean War, U.S. military data shows.

"Trump has approved potential tariffs against China, so it is time for China to play the North Korea card to deal with America". I mean, obviously, it's the very front end of a process. "Detailed negotiations have not begun". "I expect they will talk about the path going forward and where priorities should lie".

Yang Uk, senior research fellow at the Korea Defence and Security Forum, agreed that a shutdown of the Sohae testing site would be a symbolic gesture rather than a move to technically disable its missile capabilities. The official described it is as a major center that has been used for testing engines for long-distance missiles.

"This summit is significant because it will set the stage for the North Korea-US summit, and even a possible three-way summit between the countries", Im said.
