Paolo Guerrero Hugs Mile Jedinak For Helping Him Play At World Cup

Australia must beat the South Americans by the Black Sea and hope Denmark lose against France at the same 1400 GMT kick-off in order to qualify for the last 16 for the first time since 2006.

Edison Flores nearly added a third goal on the counter when he crashed a low drive onto the post from the edge of the box in the closing minutes, but the offside flag was raised and there was to be no final flourish for Peru.

A stunning Andre Carrillo volley gave Peru their first World Cup goal in 36 years before captain Paolo Guerrero grabbed a second early in the second half.

With one game left for each team, France has earned a spot in the knockout round and either Denmark or Australia will be joining them.

The Millwall attacker is at his fourth World Cup with the Socceroos and has a knack of scoring late winners.

France and Denmark drew 0-0 to make Australia's loss ultimately inconsequential as Les Bleus topped the group.

Regular striker Juric, who came off the bench to replace Nabbout, declared himself fit to start after nursing a knee injury, but Van Marwijk may be tempted to gamble with teenager Daniel Arzani, who gave the Socceroos plenty of drive after coming on in the second half against the Danes.

Australia's best chance to score came in the 27th minute when Tom Rogic made a run through the Peru defence and had his shot saved by goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. It also took the introduction of a teenager at two goals down for the Socceroos to have their first shot from outside the box.

Experienced striker Guerrero, who was only allowed to play in the tournament after the captains of Peru's World Cup opponents petitioned Federation Internationale de Football Association to temporarily lift his suspension, made the most of what may have been his final appearance for Los Incas, who finished with three points to add to the many plaudits they have won in Russia.

"We became better and better, but at the World Cup you can see for this team it is hard to make goals at this level, because against France we were at least equal and against Denmark even better".

It was Peru's first World Cup finals goal for 36 years and their large travelling support celebrated wildly.

It was telling that Gareca's warriors impressed most in their last outing, when all pressure was off and the stakes at their lowest.

Tournaments like this aren't decided on one match but more so a collection of moments.

Although already eliminated, the Peruvians head home on a high note, having grabbed their first World Cup win since their 4-1 defeat of Iran at the 1978 finals in Argentina.
