Grateful Mexicans party with South Korean ambassador after Germany World Cup exit

Germany's Toni Kroos celebrates his winner against Sweden

Germany coach Joachim Loew said he felt "huge disappointment" at seeing the holders crash out of the World Cup but said they had fully deserved it after they were sensationally beaten 2-0 by South Korea on Wednesday.

With Germany's loss, Sweden and Mexico advance from Group F. Sweden beat Mexico 3-0 in their match, which was played concurrently with the South Korean shocker.

The defeat, coupled with Sweden's win over Mexico, ensured Germany failed to emerge from the group stage for the first time.

The four-time winners had never finished outside of the top seven since their last first-round exit back in 1938, but they have fallen in Group F to break 80 years of nearly constant success.

Germany's last-gasp 2-1 win over Sweden last week was considered by many - understandably - to be the type of result that would get them going after a 1-0 loss to Mexico, but it ended up meaning little.

Leaving aside Uruguay - who won the inaugural World Cup in 1930 before not travelling to Italy for the 1934 edition - it is the sixth time in the history of the competition that the reigning champions have failed to make it past the first hurdle.

"But we now are out and, of course, it's a case of absolute sadness and disappointment, but I think we have young players who are very talented and who have the opportunity to go forward".

He said: "Germany are out of the World Cup - words that have never been uttered before at the end of a group-stage match". We are sorry for not playing like world champions, and as painful as it is, we deserve to be out.

Mexican fans in Russian Federation for the World Cup also expressed their gratitude to one South Korean they found outside the stadium in Ekaterinburg following the defeat to Sweden.

That's when South Korea stepped up.

Hummels should have scored after being picked out by Ozil with 87 minutes gone, but made a mess of his header and Kim took full advantage when, after Jang Hyun-soo had flicked on Son's corner, Kim pounced, although it took a VAR review for offside for goal to be confirmed after Kroos' touch saw the ball drop to his feet.

"Since 2006, we have been among the best four teams, but today we have not put in a performance we are normally able to do". Mexico has reached the round of 16 for the seventh straight World Cup, but this one will long be remembered.

With no option other than a victory to advance, Low inserted Mario Gomez and Muller for Khedira and Goretzka.

But a 2-0 defeat to South Korea condemned Germany to finish bottom of Group F, and many rival fans enjoying the nation's failures.

After failing to find a way past superb Korea 'keeper Jo Hyeonwoo in the second half, Germany could only look on in shock as United States referee Mark Geiger called for the video assistant referee to intervene after the unmarked Kim Younggwon had bundled his shot past Neuer from a corner early in stoppage time. Loew said he had not yet reflected on the future.
