Donald Trump lowers flag to honor five shooting victims in Maryland

People take part in a candlelight vigil near the Capital Gazette the day after a gunman killed five people inside the newspaper’s building in Annapolis Md

President Donald Trump denied the request to lower flags to honor the victims of the Capital Gazette newsroom shooting in Maryland. In the case of the Annapolis shooting, Maryland's Republican Gov. Larry Hogan already ordered the state flag flown at half-staff on Friday through sunset on Monday.

The alleged gunman in the Capital Gazette shooting Thursday mailed threatening letters before his rampage at the Annapolis newspaper, reports CBS Baltimore media partner The Baltimore Sun.

NBC said Ramos was charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

Buckley expressed frustration Monday afternoon when he was told by a Maryland congressman's office the request had not been granted.

Trump should have made the call to lower the flags to half-staff nationwide like he did following the shootings at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The Baltimore Sun, which owns the smaller newspaper, said journalists "dived under their desks and pleaded for help on social media". "It was an attack on freedom of speech".

Maryland police officers block the intersection at the building entrance, after multiple people were shot at a newspaper in Annapolis, Md., June 28, 2018.Crime scene tape surrounds a building housing The Capital Gazette newspaper's offices, June 29, 2018, in Annapolis, Md. "Obviously, I'm disappointed", said Buckley.

"This was an attack on the press", Buckley said.

He also repeatedly referred to the 2015 Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris, where al-Qaeda-affiliated gunmen killed 12 people and injured 11 others at the offices of the French satirical newspaper.

When Ramos resumed contacting the woman in January 2011, she went to the police again, obtaining two misdemeanor criminal harassment charges and also a peace order prohibiting Ramos from contacting her. Ramos pleaded guilty in July 2011 to harassment.

"It's just as important as any other tragedy", Buckley said.

The delay nearly exactly mirrored Trump's own criticism of President Barack Obama for waiting five days to sign a proclamation to honor victims of the Chattanooga recruiting center shootings in 2015. If they can throw him off his plan, it buys them time to save lives and "neutralize the threat", he said.
