World powers back Iran oil exports despite USA sanctions threat

GETTYPresident Hassan Rouhani warned Iran could soon halt exports of oil to neighbouring countries

Back on May 8, US President Donald Trump announced Washington's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal (an agreement made in 2015 between Iran, the UK, Germany, China, Russia, the US and France) as, in his words, the agreement left Iran a possibility to create a nuclear bomb bypassing all the restrictions.

As tensions grow, the United States president is demanding that all countries end imports of Iranian oil by 4 November, as part of a series of 12 demands aimed at forcing Iran to behave "like a normal country".

The other partners so far appear powerless to stop their countries' companies pulling out of Iran for fear of U.S. penalties.

Speaking after the meeting between the remaining parties to the nuclear accord, Mogherini, who chairs the talks, read a statement saying all sides would continue to look at ways to salvage the deal, despite the reimposition of us sanctions.

Speaking on July 6, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said it was unlikely European powers would be able to put together an economic package for Iran that would salvage its nuclear deal before November and warned Tehran to stop threatening to break its commitments to the accord.

They said they remained committed to the accord and to building up trade and investment links with Iran, including "the continuation of Iran's export of oil and gas" and other energy products.

"We are trying to do it (economic package) before sanctions are imposed at the start of August and then the next set of sanctions in November".

"We are meeting here today to make sure the nuclear agreement with Iran has a future", German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said as he arrived for talks with counterparts from Iran and the other signatories Britain, China, France and Russian Federation.

Trump said he was unilaterally pulling out of the deal negotiated by his predecessor because he felt it wasn't strong enough and didn't cover other issues of concern to the US and its allies, such as Iran's military influence in the Middle East and a ballistic missile program.

The Iranian president said there was no action plan or "a clear method in the proposed package for the continuation of cooperation and, similar to the previous European Union statements, it only contained general commitments". "To save the deal, other signatories should compensate for USA sanctions", a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Friday.

In another phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron late on Thursday, Rouhani described Paris' efforts to save the nuclear deal as "positive" but noted that "Europe's proposed package for keeping up cooperation in the JCPOA does not meet all our expectations".

"I am sure that we will send a united, determined and strong signal and confirm that we as treaty members will hold on to the deal", Wang said, Press TV reported. "We want to make clear to Iran that it will still gain economic benefits through this agreement".

The rial currency has fallen, prices have risen and the country has been hit by street protests and strikes.
