Donald Trump told Theresa May to sue the EU

Theresa May with the defence secretary Gavin Williamson at the Nato summit in Brussels today. Polls suggest her personal ratings have fallen to a new low

Speaking on the Andrew Marr show, Mrs May discussed her hotly disputed Brexit plan, and what Donald Trump advised her to do going forward.

"He told me should sue the European Union - not go into negotiations, sue them", Mrs May revealed on the BBC's Andrew Marr show today. "We should cherish the fact they've got the right".

Trump said Queen Elizabeth, 92, was a "fantastic woman", adding: "up close, you see she's so lovely. and she's got a lotta years left".

The US President said Friday during a joint news conference with May that he had given the Prime Minister a suggestion that she had found too "brutal".

And as May struggles to hold her own government together, with the never-ending arguments about Brexit negotiations threatening to tear her Conservative party apart.

May batted away questions about Boris Johnson, her former foreign minister who resigned last week after she announced her plan for a "soft" Brexit.

Mr Trump used an interview ahead of his United Kingdom visit to renew his personal feud with the London Mayor, attacking him over the wave of terror atrocities and accusing him of doing "a awful job". He then showered praise on May, describing the prime minister as an incredible woman and a very tough negotiator who was doing a fantastic job.

"If Trump truly wanted to emulate Churchill, he would celebrate the peace and prosperity of Europe and seek to strengthen rather than destroy trans-Atlantic ties", said Amanda Sloat, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington and a former State Department official in the Obama administration.

Trump claimed he did not criticize Prime Minister Theresa May, even though the "Sun" released audio clips showing that he did.

"The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one".

"I would say I would give our relationship in terms of grade the highest level of special", Mr Trump said.

"Be in no doubt: under the government's proposal our fingers would still be caught in this mangle and the European Union would use it ruthlessly to punish us for leaving and handicap our future competitiveness", Davis said. Discussions have been taking place for some considerable time...

"Faced with that we had an option".

She added: "David Davis was discussing with Michel Barnier".

"We could have said "Let's stay where we are and see what happens" and risk actually ending up with a chaotic leaving which I don't think is in people's interests".
