Israel and Gaza militants agree to end fierce flare-up of fighting

Palestinian teenager killed in Gaza border protests

But Intelligence Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli attacks should not be seen as the start of a military campaign against the Palestinian territory of 2 million, devastated by seven weeks of war with Israel four years ago.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group said in a separate statement that a truce had been reached.

Daoud Shiha, a spokesman of the movement, speaking to Anadolu Agency said the cease-fire came into force by 8.00 p.m. local time.

Indeed, as Bennett concluded, the greatest fear of the residents of southern Israel is that their government's policies have committed them to a "long war of attrition".

Earlier, Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem also confirmed that officials from Egypt and some global sides, which he did not name, had contacted them.

Earlier, the military said its jets targeted a Hamas tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip as well as other military compounds.

But witnesses said an Israeli strike had hit an empty building in Gaza City and that the casualties were passersby.

The senior Hamas leader said the Palestinian people would never change their stance on Jerusalem al-Quds, reiterating that the city and all other occupied territories belong to Palestinians.

No statement has been provided by Egypt yet. The Gaza Health Ministry said the two, 15 and 16, died when the building they were standing near was hit.

Amir al-Nimra, 15, and Luey Kuheyl, 14, were confirmed dead and 25 others were wounded in the airstrikes, according to the ministry.

The IDF said it had also targeted a rocket launch squad and a mortar shell launcher in the northern Gaza Strip.

Two Palestinian teenagers were killed in an airstrike in Gaza City, while three Israelis were wounded from a rocket that landed on a residential home. "Some 20 terrorist targets in the compound were destroyed... we know how to do this against any battalion, at night or in daylight".

The exchange of fire followed months of tension that has raised the prospect of a fourth war in the blockaded Gaza Strip since 2008.

Last Friday, one person was killed and 57 were wounded by Israeli military fire in protests at the Gaza-Israel border.

The IDF spokesman said the aim of the operation was to "restore a sense of security" and that the military would "respond as necessary" to a wide range of scenarios. Nearby houses were damaged.

Since protests and clashes broke out along the Gaza border on March 30, at least 141 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, 50 of those belonging to Hamas.

Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesman, said in an emailed statement late Saturday that regional and global mediators crafted an agreement that led to a truce.

Rocket warning sirens went off in the coastal city of Ashkelon, about 12 kilometres from the enclave, further north than in recent rocket attacks.

With Israel focused on efforts to prevent Iran from establishing a permanent military foothold in neighboring Syria, it has been wary of escalating violence in Gaza.
