Trump slams EU's fine against Google

The EU's politically independent executive arm did mention that "as a licensable operating system, Android is different from operating systems exclusively used by vertically integrated developers (like Apple iOS or Blackberry)". She said that European Union antitrust laws put a "special responsibility" on dominant businesses, meaning they can not deny other companies the chance "to compete with them on merit".

It's remained mostly shrouded in mystery since then, but a new report from Bloomberg claims that Fuchsia will be an all-encompassing operating system reaching across Google's entire family of hardware - including smart home devices.

The commission ruled that the bundling practices were illegal because of Google's dominance in the markets of "licensable smart mobile operating systems and app stores for the Android mobile operating system".

It delivers over 95 percent of apps downloaded to Android phones, European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said, announcing the decision.

"Google can brush [the fine] off without an enormous amount of difficultly", said Richard Windsor, founder of the tech research firm Radio Free Mobile. The EU says Google has market share exceeding 90 percent in most European countries.

The tech giant plans to appeal the decision, a Google spokesperson tells NPR. The fine marked the second time in about a year that regional regulators have needled Google for its business practices.

Google's parent company Alphabet ranked as the fifth largest information technology company in the world in 2017, with global revenue of $111 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post after the European Union ruling on Wednesday that Android created more choice for everyone and that the decision rejects the business model that supports the operating system. "Whether or not you like the result, this is law enforcement in Europe and we wouldn't like anyone interfering with law enforcement in the USA", said Gene Kimmelman, a Justice Department veteran now with advocacy group Public Knowledge.

Because it has a market share of over 80 percent in many countries, these actions essentially locked competitors out of the search market, giving Google an nearly monopoly.

"I very much like the USA... but the fact is that this (case) has nothing to do with how I feel", she said. "They could these users to try their own services before they get completely hooked on Google". It would also allow Google's AI services, something CEO Sundar Pichai has pushed forward significantly during his tenure, to reach into every Google product. The company makes enough money from its Play store to more than cover its investment in developing the operating system, she said.
