Missouri duck boat that sank killing 17 people to be raised

Duck Boat Survivor Cries Over 9 Relatives’ Drowning & Reveals Captain Said They Didn’t Need Life Vests

The service will be held Sunday afternoon at the College of the Ozarks, near Table Rock Lake, where the duck boat sank Thursday, killing 17 people.

An early investigation has found that the boast set out despite winds approaching hurricane force, according to a National Transportation Safety Board official.

Stone County Sheriff Doug Rader previously confirmed to that media outlet that the captain was among those who survived the accident.

William and Janice Bright, 65 and 64, were among the 17 people killed in the duck boat tragedy.

"I think safety measures need to be taken", Naragon said.

Among those who were hospitalized was Tia Coleman, whose husband, three children and five other relatives died. The boat struggled against the turbulent waves on Table Rock Lake, a normally placid body of water churned by a violent thunderstorm.

On Friday night, hundreds of community members and tourists lit candles, prayed and sang for the victims and their families, gathering outside the office of Ride the Ducks Branson, the company that owned and operated the boat.

Coleman is still devasted by the fact that life jackets could have saved her family members.

Tracy Beck, of Kansas City, Missouri, said she remembers the family waiting in line. "That canopy becomes what I'll call a people catcher, and people can't get out from under that canopy".

She said that after a while she felt there was nothing left to do but give up the fight and let go, allowing God take her, but that allowed her to float to the surface.

When asked by reporters on Saturday what it'll be like to return home to Indianapolis, Coleman said she knows it will be "completely, completely hard".

Carolyn and Gary Coleman talked with CBS46 about trying to process the pain after watching cell phone video of several of their family members drowning after the boat they were riding in capsized in the waters at Table Rock Lake.

Meteorologist Elisa Raffa of KOLR-TV in Springfield said in a phone interview Saturday that her station was forecasting the threat of severe weather all morning. "And I wasn't able to do that", Coleman said. The area had been under a severe thunderstorm watch for hours and a severe thunderstorm warning for more than 30 minutes before the boat sank.

Coleman said there were life jackets on board, but she says the Captain told them they wouldn't need life jackets.

Passengers on the boat were jumping into the water to help people in distress and were throwing life rafts down, said Coleman.

The boats were originally designed for the military, specifically to transport troops and supplies in World War II.

"If it wasnt for them people, we wouldnt have a town", said Stephen Lyons, who is in construction and often works on vacation homes in Branson.

"This storm didn't come out of nowhere", she said.

He also said that the life jackets were stored on the boat, but it wasn't immediately clear whether passengers were wearing them when the boat capsized.
