Prowling Tiger Woods on Open charge as Spieth joins leaders

Carnoustie on Friday morning

The clincher was a bold drive on the 18th hole that flirted with edge of a pot bunker, a wedge to 5 feet and a birdie putt that made him a major champion.

" Jordan Spieth will today attempt to become the first back-to-back victor of The Open Championship in a decade as he goes into the final round at Carnoustie tied with fellow Americans Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner".

Tiger, once regarded as the greatest golfer in the world, has won 14 major championships in his legendary career - having won every major at least three times between 1997 and 2008.

Tiger Woods says not being able to convert a one-shot lead at the Open Championship into a shock 15th major title is "going to sting". Rose's only major to date is the 2013 US Open, although he came agonisingly close at the Masters past year before losing to Sergio Garcia in a play-off. He shot 77 and missed the cut by one shot. "But who knows? They're damn good players". "Leaders were off to solid starts the first couple of holes, then all of a sudden something happened and they dropped a bunch of shots and then I knew it was game on from that point". "Next thing, lo and behold, I'm tied for the lead, and then I'm leading it".

Birdies at the fourth and sixth took Woods to the turn in 34 and, at seven under par, one shot ahead of playing partner Francesco Molinari and Spieth, who had double-bogeyed the sixth after hitting his second shot into a gorse bush.

Naturally all the attention was focused on Tiger, and then when he made two awful mistakes on the 11th it fell on Jordan Spieth and Schauffele as they at first looked solid and then unravelled, and then on Kevin Kisner and Kevin Chappell before they faltered.

"It seemed like everybody was shooting six, seven under and I figured I could probably do the same and I needed to with the leaders starting at six". "I didn't really feel in it on the front nine, I saw guys were hanging in there".

Before heading to the course on Saturday, Spieth went into Carnoustie for what he called "a very British haircut", just as Tiger Woods was rolling back the years with his third-round 66 in front of huge galleries. Hopefully, there were a lot of young kids watching on TV today, like I was watching Costantino in '95 coming so close. He made double-bogey on the 11th after needing four shots to reach the green.

"I feel fine", Spieth said.

Open runner-up Xander Schauffele insists he will look back on a chaotic final day at Carnoustie as a positive experience, despite missing the chance to win his first major.

"Francesco played really solidly today", said Woods.

A bogey on that demanding hole ended his round of 74 and dropped him into tie for second at 6 under with England's Justin Rose (who shot a 69 on Sunday), Rory McIlroy (70) of Northern Ireland, and Kisner (74).

It looked like he might do just that going into the final day.

. So big credit to my wife that watches me all the time.

"I was in the final group, I had to face a little bit of adversity early in the round, and I still gave myself a chance".

"I was trying to play for the grass to wrap the shaft around there and hit it left, and I was just trying to hold the face open as much as I possibly could".

Former world No. 1 Woods was a shot further back on 5-under but Jordan Spieth, who shared the overnight lead, fell back to 4-under after a 76. I played with him the final day at Wentworth and he didn't miss a shot.
