Trump restores Iran sanctions as Rouhani feels economic pressure

Trump team unites in bid to topple Iran regime

European businesses that pull out of Iran because of USA sanctions may end up being sued by EU states.

In an executive order yesterday, Mr Trump said the sanctions seek to pile financial pressure on Iran to force a "comprehensive and lasting solution" to Iranian threats, including its development of missiles and regional "malign" activities.

In this photo released by official website of the office of the Iranian Presidency, President Hassan Rouhani addresses the nation in a televised speech in Tehran, Iran, Monday, Aug. 6, 2018.

It called on the worldwide community "not to allow such significant achievements in multilateral diplomacy to be sacrificed in the name of American aspirations to settle political scores with Iran".

"Three months out, we have a very different picture in front of us", with higher unemployment, "widespread protests, social issues and labor unrest", one Trump official said. But on Iran, Mr Trump now has a team who share his contempt for the regime and are even more determined to see its end.

The German carmaker had announced plans in 2016 to return to Iran after economic sanctions were lifted under an worldwide agreement that sought to limit the country's nuclear program.

European enterprises can either comply with U.S. sanctions and face consequences in Europe for violating the "blocking statute" or keep doing business in Iran and face United States sanctions. Its currency the rial has lost nearly two-thirds of its value in six months.

A combination of two pictures shows U.S. President Donald Trump (L) on July 22, 2018, and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on February 6, 2018.

The company has not sold cars in Iran since 2010.

The U.S has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism.

"We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the U.S., due to the latter's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)", according to a statement on Monday from the foreign ministers of the UK, Germany, France and the EU.

Despite his claims, the accord "is working and delivering on its goal" of limiting Iran's nuclear programme, said a statement by European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers of France, Germany and the UK.

He also reiterated that on November 5, the United States would also resume sanctions against Iran's energy-related transactions, as well as business conducted by foreign financial institutions with the Central Bank of Iran.

Its efforts include a "blocking statute" created to protect companies from United States sanctions.

Saudi Arabia and Israel, Iran's key regional rivals, are among the only countries to strongly support the reimposition of United States sanctions.

Among large European companies that have suspended ambitious plans to invest in Iran in response to Trump's sanctions are France's oil major Total and its big carmakers PSA and Renault.

The "Trump Administration wants the world to believe it's concerned about the Iranian people", Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter.

Rouhani praised Europe for "resisting the Americans" in its call "to join the regime of sanctions".
