2nd Unite the Right rally happening in Washington Sunday

State Of Emergency Declared In Charlottesville For 'Unite the Right' Anniversary

Joan Fenton knows she will not make much money at her Charlottesville gift shop this weekend, when the downtown district will be virtually locked down for the anniversary of last year's deadly white nationalist rally.

The 2017 Charlottesville rally, which drew white supremacists and neo-Nazis, was originally meant to protest the planned removal of a statue depicting Confederate General Robert E. Lee that still stands. Another far-right rally is scheduled for Sunday, right outside the White House.

The goal is to keep rally goers and counter protesters separate in order to avoid violent confrontations. Their permit says they are "protesting civil rights abuse in Charlottesville".

Charlottesville this year denied organizer Jason Kessler a permit for a rally there, but he received final approval Thursday from the National Park Service for up to 400 participants at Lafayette Square for an event dubbed "Unite the Right 2".

A Charlottesville native, born in the segregated basement of the University of Virginia hospital, Brown-Grooms said white supremacy was present in Charlottesville long before the rally and is the "elephant in the room" the city now must deal with.

The groups violently clashed with counterprotesters and Antifa demonstrators, which led to the death of one counterprotester and the injury of several others, when a auto driven by James Alex Fields struck and killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

Rally supporters and counter-protesters screamed, shouted, chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles, and unleashed chemical sprays on each other that weekend in Charlottesville.

Now, some of the same right-wing groups involved in those events in Charlottesville are planning another protest to coincide with the anniversary this weekend.

Law enforcement and D.C.'s Mayor Muriel Bowser stood shoulder-to-shoulder Thursday touting lessons learned from a year ago and patrolling other controversial demonstrations. She served as director of communications for the White House office of public liaison until she was sacked in December.

Condemning racism in any form is the kind of pro forma gesture that would have been unremarkable for every commander in chief in recent decades.

"D.C. police deal with protests every week and more or less have unlimited resources". Also expected are members of Black Lives Matter, Shut It Down D.C. and other groups protesting a variety of topics, including immigration policies.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides - on many sides", Trump said in a short statement delivered in New Jersey. Entrance to the Lawn is limited to Lawn residents and those who have tickets to the Saturday morning event, "The Hope that Summons Us", set for 9 a.m.in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. "If you're going to be in town on Saturday, August 11th please stay with trusted friends and don't talk to strangers about your participation in the rally", the website says.

On the eve of the August 12 rally, dozens of young white men wearing khakis and polo shirts marched through the University of Virginia's campus, carrying torches and chanting racist and anti-Semitic slogans.
