War of Attrition Against President Trump | Spengler

Michael Cohen former lawyer for President Trump entered a guilty plea in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday that implicated Trump in some of his acts

President Trump on Wednesday slammed his former longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen for striking a plea deal with federal prosecutors admitting to campaign finance violations and implicating the president.

Almost at the same time as Cohen pled guilty, in a Virginia courtroom Trump's former campaign finance chair, Tim Manafort was found guilty on five counts of tax fraud, one count of failing to file a financial document with the government, and two counts of bank fraud.

In Virginia, Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was found guilty of tax and bank fraud, much relating to millions of dollars he earned as a political consultant for Ukraine's former president.

On Tuesday, Cohen detailed how he made pre-election hush payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal.

Trump's tweet came after Cohen's lawyer Lanny Davis participated in morning television interviews in which he indicated Cohen would not seek a pardon from Trump and had more information to share with federal officials that may be damaging to the president.

Davis said that included the "computer crime of hacking" and "whether Mr. Trump knew ahead of time about that crime and even cheered it on".

The first case is potentially more serious for the president.

In his tweets, Trump seized on the counts on which Manafort escaped conviction.

Writing on the Lawfare blog, former White House counsel Bob Bauer said the Cohen plea will resonate "unmistakably" with Mueller's investigation, "which also concerns what a candidate is prepared to do to win an election and then cover his tracks". Earlier this month, Trump acknowledged that the goal of the meeting was to "get information on an opponent" but said the method was "totally legal and done all the time in politics". "So that is the functional equivalent of the word 'cooperate.' I don't know why ... they didn't use the word", Davis said.

"The president of the United States is a criminal", he continued.

A new court filing also said that the Trump Organization approved $420,000 in reimbursements to Cohen in relation to his hush-money payments before the election.

The president went on: "Michael Cohen plead guilty to two counts of campaign finance violations that are not a crime".

Trump expressed sympathy for Manafort's plight, praising his former campaign aide for not talking to prosecutors, as Cohen has.

Yesterday... was not a good day for those formerly in Donald Trump's orbit (for the rest of us, it was glorious). Trump added in a tweet that is certain to raise speculation about whether the president might pardon Manafort at some point.

It also increases pressure on Trump personally. You know they're still looking for collusion.

"There is no allegation of any wrongdoing against the president in the government's charges against Mr. Cohen", Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani said.

It was not clear if Robert Mueller's team would be meeting with Michael Cohen.

"We should all take a moment and applaud the tremendous courage and fortitude of @StormyDaniels, who has refused to be silent, who has refused to back down, and who has allowed facts to be presented in the court of public opinion, which some may argue is the most efficient".

Davis served as special counsel to President Bill Clinton from 1996 to 1998.
