Democrats demand delay of Supreme Court justice hearing

With Republicans hoping to move the Supreme Court to the right for years to come a Senate committee is beginning hearings for President Donald Trump's second nominee to the court. Trump is seen above at the White House on Friday

The confirmation hearings should therefore be halted so these issues can be explored and proper recusals agreed to after due deliberation, including full production of the judge's documents so his views can be thoroughly probed. They do not caucus in separate rooms. "I would always strive to be a team player on the team of nine".

The Senate Judiciary Committee spent Tuesday decapitating its credibility.

As they did the day before, protesters repeatedly interrupted the session, opposing Kavanaugh's nomination, before being removed from the room by security personnel.

Committee Democrats countered that what they know about the judge scares them - but they're even more concerned with what they don't yet know, but could be hiding in millions of pages of documents from Judge Kavanaugh's time working in the Bush White House.

"The Brett Kavanaugh hearings for the future Justice of the Supreme Court are truly a display of how mean, angry, and despicable the other side is", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Otherwise, Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said, "this process will be tainted and stained forever".

"It is about politics", said Cruz.

Republican Senator Lindsay Graham said President Trump often drove him insane but his choice of Kavanaugh was the best thing he had ever done. Kavanaugh's stern reaction is going viral.

Both senators were present at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, expressing their dissent to Kavanaugh's nomination, when the emails were sent.

Besides, Grassley pointed out, not a single Democratic senator has said he or she will vote to confirm Kavanaugh, so putting off the hearings would be pointless. Add Supreme Court as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Supreme Court news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

It was, Grassley said later, "a bad start".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the committee, warned that Kavanaugh would tilt the high court to the right, especially on hot-button issues such as abortion and gun control. Their theme: The Republicans are hiding something by withholding information.

Protesters, mostly women, took turns yelling as senators spoke, shouting, "This is a travesty of justice", "Our democracy is broken" and "Vote no on Kavanaugh". "And I've seen more than anyone else in the Senate".

Trump has often criticized the federal judiciary.

Two Republican senators - Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Jeff Flake of Arizona - praised Kavanaugh personally and professionally, but raised questions about Trump's attacks on the Justice Department and how Kavanaugh would handle cases involving presidential power.

Fred Guttenberg, the father of Jamie Guttenberg who was killed in a shooting in Parkland, Fla., left, attempts to shake hands with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, right. So Republicans have released only those documents they consider most relevant - about 440,000 pages for senators to see, and fewer than 300,000 publicly. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. She pointed to Kavanaugh's work investigating then-President Bill Clinton in the 1990s with independent counsel Kenneth Starr, litigating the contested presidential election of 2000 and work in the George W. Bush White House.

Tuesday's proceedings brought to the surface years of anger over judicial nominees.

The testy exchanges Tuesday morning highlight Democrats' lingering resentment over the treatment of former President Obama's last Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, who was never granted a hearing by Senate Republicans. Had Grassley not steamrolled right over Senate rules of procedure, they would have been at least temporarily successful in those efforts. But with Trump's fellow Republicans holding a slim majority in the Senate, and with no sign of any of them voting against the nomination, it remains likely Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the lifetime job on top USA judicial body.

When the hearing turned from controversy over process to substance, Durbin thrust home the meat of the Democratic case. "No security involved. He turned and walked away".

'I guess he did not want to deal with the reality of gun violence'. "And she taught me that good judges must always stand in the shoes of others".
