Kavanaugh protesters being paid to cause trouble

Judge Brett Kavanaugh 53 has served for the past 12 years on the appeals court in Washington D.C. which is considered the second most important court in the country after the Supreme Court

Republicans hope to confirm Kavanaugh in time for the first day of the new Supreme Court term, October 1.

John Cornyn of Texas spoke out as Democrats demanded an adjournment and two dozen protesters were dragged out of the room in chaotic scenes.

Kavanaugh is expected to get questions on this later in Wednesday's hearing, and he knew it. In Meyer v. Nebraska, the Court struck down a Nebraska law that prohibited teaching foreign languages in public schools to young students, finding that it violated the right to liberty, which includes the right to "establish a home and bring up children".

What were the protests about? One woman was led out shouting, "Sham president, sham justice". Another cried: "Our democracy is broken!"

Addressing some of those concerns, Kavanaugh said that "the first thing that makes a good judge is independence, not being swayed by political or public pressure", He cited historic court cases including Brown v. Board of Education that desegregated schools and US v. Nixon that compelled the president to turn over the Watergate tapes - a ruling that Kavanaugh had previously questioned.

In addition to the 10,000-plus pages of Kavanaugh's 307 opinions and those of his colleagues, Grassley praised the 120 pages of written responses Kavanaugh provided in response to senators' questions, and that he had "submitted more than 17,000 pages of speeches, articles, and other material to the committee".

Protesters dressed in The Handmaid's Tale costume, protest outside the hearing room where Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

"President Trump claims he has an absolute right to pardon himself".

The organization reported how abortion activists "wearing red robes and white bonnets from "The Handmaid's Tale" lined the balconies in the Hart Senate Office Building as the hearing began".

So you have got a view of the Second Amendment that's really far outside of the mainstream in Judge Kavanaugh. Kamala Harris raised objections to the committee just receiving a batch of 42,000 documents relating to the nominee's work with past administrations. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., theatrically pulled out a copy of the Constitution and said he could not find the name of William Burck in the section where it says Congress should provide "advice and consent" to nominations.

But the panel chairman refused to delay the process.

He said he would respect past Supreme Court rulings.

In her remarks, Klobuchar suggested that 1) aspects of the Trump presidency to date have left her anxious that Trump's willingness to abide by laws and precedents; 2) that Kavanaugh's position on the three-judge panel left her anxious that as a Supreme Court justice he might take an extremely expansive view of presidential power and 3) that that might be among the reasons Trump wants him on the Supreme Court.

Why is the nomination contentious?

On Wednesday, members of the Senate committee were granted up to 30 minutes each to grill Kavanaugh on a variety of subjects. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) while interrupting Grassley, referring to the September 3 release to the committee of 42,000 documents relating to the nominee's work with past administrations. Kennedy had a track record of siding with the more liberal justices on the bench on some decisions, the more conservative wing on others. He retired in July. And he says he did not help set up or give legal advice for the Bush-era enhanced interrogation techniques that Congress later banned, a point of contention for Democrats who think he did play a role.

Republicans will hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate once Jon Kyl, the former Arizona senator, is sworn in to fill the seat held by the late Sen.

But Kavanaugh's nomination languished for three years, as Democrats fumed over his participation in Bush's recount team. All that said, it's still crystal clear that Brett Kavanaugh is historically unpopular with Americans.
