Apple can avoid tariffs by shifting production to U.S

Trump upped the ante on Friday, warning he was ready to slap tariffs on almost all Chinese imports to the United States, threatening duties on another $267 billion of goods on top of $200 billion in imports primed for levies in coming days.

A package of tariffs worth $200bn is close to being imposed on Chinese imports to the United States and Trump's latest suggested round - which would be worth $267bn - would sharply escalate Trump's trade war with China.

Zhang said the impact from U.S. tariffs on China's exports would likely be limited over the next few months.

Mr Trump spoke yesterday as his administration prepared to apply 25 per cent tariffs to $200 billion of Chinese goods, in addition to levies that have been applied already to $50 billion of Chinese goods.

China's trade surplus with the United States widened to a record in August even as the country's export growth slowed slightly, an outcome that could push President Donald Trump to turn up the heat on Beijing in their cantankerous trade dispute. "And I hate to say this, but behind that is another $267bn ready to go on short notice if I want".

Stocks dipped after the comments, with the S&P500 off 0.2 percent.

The US dollar rallied versus major peers and the offshore Chinese yuan fell the most in a week.

"Apple prices may increase because of the massive tariffs we may be imposing on China - but there is an easy solution where there would be zero tax, and indeed a tax incentive", Trump tweeted on Saturday.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on Friday the Trump administration would evaluate the public comments before making any decisions on the new proposed tariffs.

Sherill Mosee, founder of MinkeeBlue, a Philadelphia company that makes travel and work bags, said that her four-year-old business will probably have to suspend operations if the tariffs hit and the administration starts taxing imported Chinese luggage and handbags.

In light of such a USA agenda, China should "maintain strategic determination" and "take care of our own matters", Long Guoqiang, vice president of the State Council's Development Research Center, wrote in the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party.

But, they'd also be hit by the threatened 267 billion dollar list.

The US has imposed $50 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese goods with another $200 billion in the final stages. Those talks will continue to go on. Those tactics, the Office of the US Trade Representative has alleged, include stealing trade secrets through computer hacking and forcing US companies to hand over technology in exchange for access to the Chinese market.

"Those have been our asks for many months and so far those asks have not been satisfied", he said.
