Male tennis players call out sexism and support Serena Williams

Mouratoglou 'I coached but also Toni Nadal Bajin coached on every point'

Williams was handed three code violations by umpire Carlos Ramos during her Grand Slam final against Japan's Naomi Osaka: one for coaching after Ramos ruled that her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, gave her hand signals from the stands; another for smashing her racket; and a last one for verbal abuse after she confronted the umpire.

Mother of all meltdowns.

"I just want to tell you guys she played well and this is her first Grand Slam", Williams said, as cheers erupted.

And as renowned author HL Mencken once proclaimed in explaining Williams' ranting and raving: "Injustice is relatively easy to bear; what stings more is justice".

During a changeover, Williams resumed her argument with the umpire, this time saying he was attacking her character and was a "thief".

Williams, of course, was docked about $24,000, after verbally abusing chair umpire Carlos Ramos, being warned for coaching and breaking a racket. Osaka said she was grateful for Williams's efforts. He accused her of communicating with her coach, something that many players do without penalty.

The Serb, who equaled Pete Sampras' Grand Slam record of 14 titles after beating Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday, also insisted Ramos' actions had a decisive effect on the match.

But the most regrettable result of the traumatic occasion that will now forever be tarnished with notoriety, is that Osaka's masterly display will be underscored, with attention heaped on the villain of the piece instead of the hero!

Others on Twitter agreed the incident was reflective of how women are treated in wider society. The suggestion of one columnist that Ramos' position in a high chair during the match was itself a symbol of entrenched privilege overlooks the very reason for such positioning: the official is required to have a perspective on the match that the committed competitors can not. The moment she won the match, his wife and daughter threw their arms in the air in celebration and shed tears of joy, he said.

Novak Djokovic, the U.S. Open men's champion, trod delicately when asked about the Serena Williams controversy that erupted Saturday evening, overshadowing his 14th Grand Slam title.

"Yesterday also brought to the forefront the question of whether different standards are applied to men and women in the officiating of matches", Simons said in a statement. I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us.

When the violation was announced Williams approached Ramos to say she never takes coaching and would rather lose than "cheat to win".

Williams was fined a total of 17,000 U.S. dollars (approximately £13,000), including 10,000 dollars (£7,700) for verbal abuse.

Her stance was swiftly backed by the WTA Tour's chief executive Steve Simon, and United States great Billie-Jean King, both of whom also questioned the initial code violation handed to Williams for on-court coaching. "We have to stop this hypocrisy", he said.

Serena Williams has to pay for the fines out of her $1.85 Million tournament winnings.
