Obama lashes out at Trump and 'radical' Republicans

Former president Barack Obama

Former President Barack Obama has backed the Democratic party's campaign efforts by throwing shade at President Donald Trump and voicing support for progressive policies.

Obama called the 2018 midterm elections "a chance to restore some sanity in our politics", according to NBC News.

"If we don't step up, things can get worse", the former president told the audience at the Anaheim Convention Center. "Your lies, your policies, and your divisiveness". "He is a symptom, not the cause". They aren't accountable."They're not doing us a service by actively promoting 90 per cent of the insane stuff that's coming out of this White House and then saying, 'Don't worry, we're preventing the other 10 per cent.' That's not how things are supposed to work. I don't agree with President Obama, he's President Obama, he won the election".

"You can't stand it that every metric under the Trump administration is better off than when you were in office".

Obama also addressed Trump's tone-deaf comments previous year, when the president claimed that there were "some very fine people on both sides" during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that saw white supremacists squaring off against anti-racism protesters.

Mr Obama, reacting to the article, said "that's not how our democracy is supposed to work".

"We are Americans, we're supposed to stand up to bullies".

Outside Saturday's event there were around 18 pro-Trump demonstrators, with one woman wearing a "Make California Great Again" shirt, borrowing from Trump's campaign slogan.

Former President Barack Obama is in California to campaign for Democratic congressional candidates one day after issuing a stinging rebuke of his successor in the White House. "I found that he's very, very good for sleeping", he said.

The speech was "something different", said Esther Castaneda, 34, a small business owner from Orange, California.

Then president Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama pose with then president-elect Donald Trump and his wife Melania at the White House in Washington, Friday, Jan. 20, 2017.

Trump, asked about that speech during a trip to North Dakota, quipped that he had watched it but fallen asleep.

Mr Trump said Mr Obama was trying to take credit for this "incredible thing that's happening to our country".

"The idea that he doesn't take the respect of past presidents - you never saw George Bush going out talking in a campaign", Mr. McCarthy said. "You can't opt out because you don't feel sufficiently inspired by this or that particular candidate".

Time will tell whether a so-called Democratic "blue wave" happens in the midterms as some Democrats hope.
