Hearing With Kavanaugh And Accuser Alleging Sexual Assault In Turmoil

Those maneuvers to rush through Kavanaugh's confirmation in spite of these serious allegations have Democrats incensed.

Once nominated, high-court nominees customarily make pro forma rounds of Senate offices and then retreat beyond public view, to be drilled by tough-minded interrogators preparing them for searing Judiciary Committee hearings and last-minute vulnerabilities. "So it kind of raises the question.do they want to come to (the) publichearing or not?"

While critics of the accusation have dismissed it as a "he said, she said", and argue that we have two competing accounts that simply can't be reconciled, that's increasingly not the case.

Slamming Collins' recommendation to the Senate Judiciary Committee as "beyond shameful", Ultraviolet founder Shaunna Thomas added: "This is not a trial".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) testifies during a hearing before the Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance, and Data Security Subcommittee on July 24, 2018 on Capitol Hill in Washington. It said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had forwarded to the White House a letter, evidently from Ford, describing alleged misconduct in the 1980s by Kavanaugh.

With their narrow Senate majority, Republicans could ram through Kavanaugh's nomination without any Democratic support, but doing so might prove risky in a year that has seen a surge of women, motivated by their opposition to Trump, vote in primary and special elections.

"Fortunately, we had a good saying that we've held firm to to this day, as the dean was reminding me before the talk, which is, 'What happens at Georgetown Prep, stays at Georgetown Prep, '" Kavanaugh said.

Judge submitted a letter through an attorney to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that said he had "no memory of this alleged incident".

Ford initially declined to come forward.

"It's frankly a bad thing that this information wasn't given to us a long time ago - months ago, when they got it", he said.

Democrats have rejected the GOP process and are refusing to participate in any committee phone interviews.

Judiciary Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has set a hearing date for early next week to decipher the allegation.

"Judge Kavanaugh is one of the finest people that I've ever known".

Ford said in the interview with the newspaper that Kavanaugh threw her down on a bed, grinding his body against hers and trying to pull off her one-piece bathing suit and the clothing she was wearing over it. Ford said when she tried to scream, he put his hand over her mouth.

Alex Conant, a former aide to Republican Senator Marco Rubio, said there remains risk to Donnelly and the other red-state senators if they oppose Kavanaugh on any grounds, given they have boasted of their ability to work with Trump.

Murray and other Democrats are drawing a direct parallel between the claims against Kavanaugh and those raised in 1991 when Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court.

Thomas was eventually confirmed to the court. She said she got away when a companion of Kavanaugh's jumped on him.

Some Democrats raised questions about whether Grassley's planned hearings were sufficient. For one thing, the committee was made up of 14 white men, and there were only two women in the entire Senate at the time. Overall, there are now 23 women in the Senate: 17 Democrats and six Republicans.

Leahy dismissed Republican complaints that the information was coming to light near the end of the confirmation process, arguing that they had rushed the process and failed to turn over records of Kavanaugh's government service.
