Labour votes to keep open the option of second Brexit referendum

Sajid Javid Home Office

Britain's ruling Conservative Party hold their annual conference next week, and all eyes are on whether May can win over critics of her Brexit proposals.

Mr Corbyn said it would be a "piece of cake" for shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer to negotiate a deal with Brussels after he succeeded in getting agreement among party members on Tuesday.

But Labour lawmaker David Lammy, who backs a second vote, said a referendum offering the choice between "no deal or a bad deal" would be "farcical".

Corbyn, a long-time euroskeptic, must find a way to reconcile his pro-EU MPs and members with the party's working class voter base, many of whom support Brexit, if he is to capitalize on May's vulnerability. Longstanding EU opponents like veteran MP Dennis Skinner were unimpressed.

Furious that the priority for the hard left leadership was on saving Jeremy Corbyn's blushes, not stopping a Tory hard Brexit, members from across the party worked to get a vote at this year's conference.

This matters. With the views of pro-Brexit activists in Labour's heartlands in the North at complete odds with the views of Remain enthusiasts in metropolitan London and elsewhere, Mr Corbyn will have to bridge this divide when he makes his keynote leader's speech today. "It's more about power struggles in Britain than about managing Brexit seriously".

Starmer said Labour preferred the uncertainty to be settled in a general election "but if that's not possible, we must have other options. that must include campaigning for a public vote".

Barnier has offered no opinion on the merits of Labour's Brexit proposals - which envisage Britain staying in a customs union with the EU after Brexit - as opposed to those of Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May.

Europe is therefore anxious, and Barnier took the opportunity of Corbyn's visit to Brussels to attend a tribute to murdered pro-Europe Labour MP Jo Cox to arrange a meeting.

"Looking at the state of the negotiations, which are frankly chaotic and failing, it looks like she is not going to meet those tests so in those circumstances we will vote against a deal that she brings back", he added.

May insisted she could get a deal with the European Union, and get it past lawmakers. The Irish government, meanwhile, is preparing for the possibility of a no deal Brexit, and Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said that his government is "hiring extra staff and officials, putting in IT systems, we're ready for that eventuality should it occur".

It was passed in a show of hands and it is reported that only a few voted against the motion.

"Corbyn's United Kingdom would face economic deep freeze", said the Daily Telegraph headline, while the Express headlined a warning by the Confederation of British Industry of the cost of Labor's policies.

Starmer said a meeting of party officials on Sunday had agreed that any second vote could allow for Britons to vote to stay in the European Union after all.

She will go on to say she has a plan for an economy that is "knowledge-rich, highly-innovative, highly-skilled and high quality but with low tax and smart regulation".
