'First known exomoon may have been discovered'

Astronomers are convinced that found the first known analogue of the Month outside of our Solar system, which orbits around the giant planet, over 8 thousand light-years from Earth. An ageing sun-like star in the constellation Cygnus is known to host a huge, gas giant planet the size of Jupiter, known as Kepler 1625b. This is the first known large satellite of the planet outside the solar system.

Now, David Kipping and Alex Teachey from Columbia University in NY are hoping that in their result and reports have taken every hypothesis in consideration and that they will get independent confirmation and appreciation. The planet itself is several times heavier than Jupiter, and its mass, the moon is 1.5% of the mass of the planet.

In flickering light of a distant sun, scientists may have discovered the first moon outside our solar system.

Alex Tichy (Alex Teachey) and David Kipping (David Kipping) from Columbia University reported the discovery of azospermia by the Hubble space telescope. The new alien moon is roughly the size of Neptune, which has a diameter four times larger than Earth's and is 17 times as massive.

To find evidence for the exomoon - dubbed Kepler-1625b-i - the team observed the planet while it was in transit in front of its parent star, causing a dimming of the starlight. A mass ratio that is similar to that of Earth and the Moon. With his help, they found a second, much smaller depressions in the brightness of the star through 3.5 hours after the transit of the planet.

There are other possible explanations, but "a companion moon is the simplest and most natural explanation for the second dip in the light curve and the orbit-timing deviation", Kipping said in a statement. This is consistent with the planet and moon orbiting a common center of gravity (barycenter) that would cause the planet to wobble from its predicted location.

In the Hubble data, they saw a moon tugging along, "trailing the planet like a dog following its owner on a leash".

However, the pair are cautious about confirming the find as an exomoon and say more observation is needed.

"The first exomoon is obviously an extraordinary claim and it requires extraordinary evidence", Teachey told reporters in a teleconference organized by the journal that published the findings.

Neither Kepler 1625b nor its moon are likely to be habitable, the scientists said, because both are made mostly of gas. "But we knew our job was to keep a level head and essentially assume it was bogus, testing every conceivable way in which the data could be tricking us".

Scientists have never had enough evidence to confirm that any exoplanet has a moon orbiting it, but that might be about to change.

KIPPING: So when we look for an Earth twin, I think one of the most obvious things you might ask is, does it have a moon twin, because that seems to have a large influence. But, according to Kipping, neither gaseous object is suitable for life as we know it. They were in awe by how different the moon was from our solar system. GREENFIELDBOYCE: The researchers have requested more time on Hubble to do more observations next May. They checked about 300 planets for any weirdness that might mean a moon.
