Uncertain future for survivors in quake-shattered Indonesian city

French say no more signs of life in Indonesia hotel rubble

At least 92 people were detained for looting on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island, where at least 1,407 people died after a 7.5 magnitude natural disaster and tsunami last week, the Indonesian police said on Thursday.

The official death toll from the 7.5 magnitude quake that struck the west coast of the island of Sulawesi last Friday stood at 1,234, many killed by tsunami waves triggered by the quake. Local television said the man, the only foreigner known to have perished in the disaster, was a paraglider taking part in an event in the area. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue crews dig and comb through debris after being slowed initially by impassable roads and other damage. The government has said hundreds of people were severely injured in Friday's disasters.

The improvements are helping with the aid effort.

Suahasil Nazara, the Head of the Fiscal Policy Agency, Ministry of Finance, Indonesia, said that the country must work to ensure it has the capacity to respond to disaster.

"I have ordered the police chief and military commander to deploy more personnel in guarding gas stations and business centres so as to make stores reopened, recover the economy in Palu", he said on Tuesday. Many roads in the quake zone are blocked and communications lines are down five days after the magnitude 7.5 natural disaster and tsunami struck.

Aid organisations are urgently working with the government to identify and reunite them with their relatives, the group said.

"Australia will deliver more supplies in the coming days".

"We will start again here ourselves because God does not strike twice", said Eko Joko who was building a new house, a wooden A-frame home, in the midst of a wasteland of concrete, mangled sheets of iron and uprooted trees near Palu's beach.

"I hope my dead son has gone to heaven because he was in the middle of praying", said Abu Shamsuddin, who attended Friday prayers in the afternoon outside the damaged Agung Mosque in Palu city. More than a thousand people could still be missing, officials said, drastically upping the total number of people unaccounted for a week after the disaster.

"This is really a challenging and hard time for Indonesia and for all of us, but we are united and we stand strong and we are confident of withstanding this hard time", he told a briefing of the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club on Wednesday evening.

"But we still can not be sure because there's a possibility that some people managed to get out".

"We will continue to work closely with the Indonesian government to help people affected by this tragedy", Foreign Minister Marise Payne said.

"We survived here", Fitriani said.
