Abu Dhabi Test: Pakistan in control, lead Australia by 281 runs

Pakistan cricketer Fakhar Zaman (C-front) plays a shot during day two of the second Test cricket match in the series between Australia and Pakistan at the Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on October 17, 2018.

Fakhar Zaman (66) and Azhar Ali (54 not out) both scored half-centuries to guide Pakistan to 144-2 at stumps on day two, leading Australia in their second innings by 281 runs.

Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas had Usman Khawaja - who scored a fighting 141 to lead Australia's fightback for a draw in the first Test in Dubai last week - caught behind for his 50th Test wicket in 10 Tests.

Australia's hopes of salvaging a test hurtling towards an early finish crumbled when Marnus Labuschagne (25) was run out in freakish circumstances after lunch.

Ahmed was, by far, more aggressive, and kept the scoreboard moving with constant rotation of the strike before his 129-ball knock was ended in which he hit seven boundaries.

The left-handed opener had surgery in Dubai on Saturday and would return home on Tuesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board said. "If we score 100-150 runs more on Thursday then with a turning wicket we have a very good chance of winning this Test".

Australia will look to manage their pace spearhead's workload with a World Cup and an Ashes series to be played within the next 12 months.

Australia kept the same eleven from the first Test.

The last wicket was that of Starc's to fall - trapped leg before wicket.

Abbas had Shaun Marsh, in the fourth over of the day, for three and Travis Head for 14 before wrapping up the innings by trapping Starc leg-before for 34. Muhammad Abbas' five-wicket haul helped Pakistan dominate.

Yasir Shah dismissed Mitchell Marsh with a delivery that took some turn to get the outside edge.

He added 48 in Pakistan's second innings of 181 for six declared but broke the little finger on his left hand while fielding on the fifth and final day and was forced from the ground.
