Migrant caravan: 4,000 trekking towards United States border

Trump threatens to send army to US-Mexico border in migrant row

He called on Mexico to ensure the migrants do not reach the USA border while threatening Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador with financial penalties.

"I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught - and if unable to do so I will call up the US Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!" Trump said on Twitter.

Meanwhile in Arizona large groups of Central American migrants continue to surrender to Border Patrol agents, with the arrival of one recent group numbering 108 captured in dramatic video images, authorities said on Friday.

Mexico has deployed 500 federales to its southern border to address the crisis, but the caravan of over 4,000 mostly-Honduran migrants outnumbers any previous group to arrive in the country en masse, according to Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be in Mexico this Friday, and US media report that he will discuss plans to stop the caravan.

This includes a visit to Mexico ahead of its December inauguration of President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The threat came in a series of angry tweets about immigration in which he also warned that he could stop funding to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, and again falsely accused Democrats of wanting "open borders" and "weak laws".

However, by the end of Thursday, the US president was also thanking Mexico for its efforts to contain the caravan.

The migrants say they organized for the long and hard journey on social media, but Washington suspects the group has been organized as a deliberate provocation. Mexico has sought help from the United Nations' refugee agency, which may have the effect of dispersing the caravan.

Honduran migrants heading in a caravan to the United States, walk in direction to the border with Mexico as they leave Guatemala City on October 18, 2018.

However, as USA Today notes, it is "not entirely clear" what Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez can do to turn the migrants back now that they are on Guatemalan soil.

The "March of the Migrant" began on Saturday in Honduras with just over 1,000 Hondurans en route to the United States of America. The nearest border is about 110 miles (177 km) away.

"We obviously are sensitive to the humanitarian situation that we encounter", Gutiérrez said.

In April, Mexican immigration officials had some success in dispersing a smaller caravan by processing many who made a decision to seek refugee status in Mexico, but some did continue on to the us border.

The president has repeatedly claimed that the migrants, and immigrants more broadly, lead to increased crime rates and allow illegal substances to pass over the border, although statistics suggest they do not.

Carlson said that, to the left, people who support a wall and rule-of-law immigration policies are largely "bigots" and "moral reprobates". The rest want to reach the US like him.

In a string of tweets on Thursday, Trump also said the issue was more important to him than the new trade deal with Mexico to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement pact. And he threatened to send troops to "shut down" the southern US border if Mexico failed to stop what he called an "onslaught". "The United States stands ready to assist the Government of Mexico and UNHCR in this effort".
