Saudi officials say Jamal Khashoggi died in a "fist fight"

Erdogan, Trump hold phone conversation on Khashoggi

The New York-based firm said it was not working in tandem with the Saudi government, and when it works with governments, the company "has not and never would engage in any work that seeks to target individuals based on their views", according to a statement released on Saturday night.

Although he asserted that Saudi Arabia was determined to take action to investigate Khashoggi's killing and hold those responsible accountable, al-Jubeir claimed that the government doesn't know how the journalist was killed or where his body is.

Trudeau, speaking on French-language talk show "Tout Le Monde En Parle" - recorded Thursday, before Riyadh confirmed Khashoggi's death at its Istanbul consulate - insisted Canada would "always defend human rights, including with Saudi Arabia".

Germany and France on Saturday called Saudi Arabia's explanation of how Mr Khashoggi died incomplete.

Saudi officials on Sunday referred to the incident as a "huge and grave mistake". "That is unacceptable in any government", al-Jubeir said on Sunday.

The king has the authority to change the line of succession - as he did when he appointed his son crown prince in the first place, upending the previous royal consensus.

"Why did these 15 people come here?" King Salman, 82, has handed the day-to-day running of Saudi Arabia to him.

Turkish officials suspect the body of Mr Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and critic of powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was cut up but the Saudi official said it was rolled up in a rug and given to a "local cooperator" for disposal.

Turkey's Anadolu agency said early on Monday that Erdogan and U.S. President Donald Trump had spoken on the telephone and agreed that "all aspects" of the case needed to be cleared up.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters in Berlin on Sunday that she supports a freeze on arms exports to Saudi Arabia.

"I am not satisfied until we find the answer", Trump said Saturday. "We haven't reached that point", the president said. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) said the Saudi ambassador should be formally expelled from the United States if an investigation shows the crown prince's involvement.

"There remains an urgent need for clarification of exactly what happened on October 2nd - beyond the hypotheses that have been raised so far in the Saudi investigation, which need to be backed by facts to be considered credible", the statement said. He initially said he believed the Saudi account.

TRT World's Ben Said has more. In a detailed account, the official said members of the 15-man Saudi team threatened to drug and kidnap Khashoggi and had "killed him in a chokehold" when he resisted.
