Turkish employees of Saudi consulate give statements in Khashoggi probe

President Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Missoula Mont. on Thursday

Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post, had gone missing since entering the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the World Editors Forum (WEF) issued the call for action in a statement on Friday, shortly after Saudi State Television confirmed that Mr. Khashoggi died after an altercation inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. He also said he will talk soon to Prince Mohammed.

The newspaper said the four calls went to Bader al-Asaker, the head of Prince Mohammed's office.

Turkish media quotes officials saying a team of 15 Saudis removed Khashoggi's fingers, killed him and dismembered him. "This was a premeditated murder and the body was moved out of the consulate".

So far, the search for Khashoggi's corpse has been fruitless.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency announced the calls to Khashoggi's son, Salah, early Monday morning.

"Jamal is a Saudi citizen who went missing after leaving the consulate", he wrote. However, Madrid's analysis was based on information shared by Saudi prosecutors, and did not openly question Riyadh's shifting versions of events.

The European Union says the emerging details of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death are "deeply troubling" and that a "continued thorough, credible and transparent investigation" is needed.

However, the new narrative - that Khashoggi was accidentally strangled after a brawl erupted between him and officials inside the consulate - was greeted with scepticism and condemnation from the global community.

For weeks, Saudi Arabia insisted the Washington Post contributor had left the consulate.

The government of Saudi Arabia has admitted what everybody knows: Emissaries from Riyadh murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, and there are no significant checks on the crown prince's powers.

"We have to be able to pursue our strategic objectives, but we also have to deal with, obviously, what seems to be a awful situation", he added.

As of now, 18 Saudi suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the incident and two senior Saudi officials fired.

"Trump may just be using harsh words because the midterm elections are coming up, and actually he might not do anything at all because Saudi Arabia is a key USA ally in the Middle East", Liu said. That explanation has sparked allegations of a cover-up meant to shield the powerful crown prince.

As Turkish President Erdogan is expected to reveal all details into the journalist's killing, Trump has stepped back from his stance that Saudi Arabia's latest explanation over the death was credible amid mounting pressure at home. Saudi Arabia has acknowledged that the critic died there, though says his death was the result of a "fistfight".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, delivers a speech at supporters in Istanbul, Sunday.

The driver reportedly said they did not sense an extraordinary situation on the day when Khashoggi entered the consulate, that he was not sent anywhere out of the consulate, and the working hours began at 9 a.m. (0600GMT) and ended 3:30 p.m. (1230GMT) local time.

Britain joined forces with France and Germany yesterday with a joint statement condemning the killing of journalists as unacceptable.
