Russian fans injured as Rome metro escalator gives way

Images shared by the fire and rescue service showed the damage done to steps

The news agency ANSA quoted Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi as saying that witnesses reported people were jumping and dancing on the escalator before the accident.

Twenty people, a lot of them fans of the CSKA Moscow football team, have been hurt after a crowded escalator at a Rome metro station suddenly sped up, hurling people down the staircase.

People on the parallel escalator can be seen trying to grab those on the broken machine and pull them to safety.

The AGI news agency said that "a large group of CSKA fans, probably under the influence of alcohol, began to jump together, provoking the collapse" of one part of the escalator.

Many fans sustained cuts to their legs by shattered metal and glass.

"A group of CSKA fans were going down into the station".

Supporters of the CSKA club were travelling to watch their team play in a Champions League match against Roma when the escalator gave way at Repubblica station in the Italian capital, reports Sky Italia.

An escalator at Rome's Repubblica station collapsed this evening injuring tens of Russian football fans on their way to the Olimpico Stadium.
