Trump insists on10 percent tax middle classes cut amid skepticism

Sen. Dean Heller R-Nev. left and Rep. Jacky Rosen D-Nev. shake hands before a U.S. Senate debate Friday Oct. 19 2018 in Las Vegas

The Washington Post reported that nobody in the White House nor on Capitol Hill was aware of a 10 percent middle-class tax cut when Trump bragged about creating one while speaking to reporters over the weekend. He said Monday a legislation in this regard is being brought before the Congress ahead of the polls, and after the elections a voting on this would held.

WASHINGTON ― Seeming to conjure policy out of thin air, President Donald Trump said over the weekend there would be "a major tax cut for middle-income people" early in November.

White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said Trump's new idea is "in the planning stage" and shows how the president is always pushing for taxes to be lowered.

Brady's statement about continuing to work with the White House played into the president's narrative, although it seemed to slow down the timeframe to allow the midterm elections to pass and Congress to come back into session.

The President has talked up the possibility of a 10% tax cut for middle-income Americans on the campaign trail and in the White House in recent days.

He also defended the administration's first round of tax cuts.

The White House and many Republicans said the massive tax cut law they passed previous year would ensure a big win in the midterm elections, but polling has found the law is unpopular with many voters because it delivered the biggest long-term benefits to companies and upper-income Americans.

Trump continued that House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) is "working on it".

At a rally in Texas on Monday night, Trump told the crowd, "In fact, I just left Kevin Brady". For individual filers, income up to $9,525 has a 10 percent rate, up to $38,700 faces a 12 percent rate and up to $82,500 sees a 22 percent rate. "The Democrats do not give that", the USA president said.

A new round of tax cuts without offsets would further add to the deficit, which reached $779 billion, a six-year high, in Trump's first full year in office.

Republicans said workers would eventually benefit from corporate tax changes that spur capital investment and increase productivity over a period of years.

Democrats, meanwhile, have tried to make the protection of health-care benefits a central focus of their midterm message, forcing Republicans to pledge support for health-care policies they have spent years trying to unravel. Tax cuts enacted under President George W. Bush's tenure were extended in 2012 during Barack Obama's administration, for example. The chief economic adviser said the cuts worked and "blue collar people are booming". More than half of the respondents said they didn't know if their tax payments had changed, according to the survey results. Large chunks of the public still don't understand what was in the legislation, said David Winston, a longtime Republican pollster who advises GOP lawmakers. "His basic political intuition is to run on what you're going to do, not what you have done".
