United States security chief in Moscow as nuclear treaty hangs in balance

US will increase nuclear arsenal if others don't 'come to their senses': Donald Trump

"Russia has not adhered to the agreement".

"Russia has violated the agreement".

Countries around the globe urged the U.S.to stay in the three-decade-old arms control treaty with Russian Federation.

Bolton also told one Russian news outlet he brought up election meddling in his conversations with Russian officials, though he also said that their meddling didn't have an impact on the election.

Not bound by the nuclear arms treaty, China has built and deployed a sophisticated and modern missile arsenal that means it can target United States and allied military assets in the Asia-Pacific region, including its aircraft carriers and airbases.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Trump on Sunday to stress the importance of the treaty, his office said on Monday.

Russian Federation denies the US accusations and claims that some elements of the USA missile-defense systems in Europe violate the treaty - a charge that Washington denies.

Moscow was ready to work with the United States to salvage the agreement, the Russian Security Council said after a meeting between its chief Nikolai Patrushev and US National Security Adviser John Bolton.

"It was not true then, and it will not be true now, with this treaty", he said.

"Until they get smart, there's going to be nobody that's going to be even close to us". In fact they said: "'You are breaching the INF treaty, '" Bolton said in an interview with Kommersant, a Russian broadsheet.

"China would have little choice but to spend more on the military - read less on the economy - or come to the negotiating table to come to an agreement about mid-range systems", said Nagy.

The Kremlin denied any such violation and suggested that it was Washington - and not Moscow - that had failed to comply with the pact.

Trump has confirmed that he would withdraw the U.S. from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty with Russian Federation that limited the number of missiles in the two nations, accusing Moscow of violating the deal.

"The U.S.is unilaterally pulling out of the pact while making an issue out of China", Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters Tuesday in Beijing.

Speaking in Moscow, Bolton said that Russian Federation had been violating the treaty for years and that rising powers such as China meant that it was a "new strategic reality out there".

In talks the previous day with his Russian counterpart, Nikolai Patrushev, and a dinner with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, he said he discussed USA plans for withdrawal from the 1987 treaty, among other issues, the news service reported.

Lee estimated that about 95 percent of the missiles in China's arsenal would violate the INF Treaty if Beijing were a signatory. How are we going to try and counter that?

He said he had engaged in lengthy discussions with Putin about the planned US withdrawal.

Yet the over-arching concern of many arms control experts is that the U.S. decision on INF will set the stage for mounting tensions and unbridled efforts by the major powers to out-arm each other with nuclear weapons.

These include China's DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), which has a maximum range of 4,000 km (2,500 miles) and which the Pentagon says can threaten U.S. land and sea-based forces as far away as the Pacific island of Guam.

Belousov said Russian Federation has repeatedly called for "appropriate conditions that would allow us to take practical measures to free the world from nuclear weapons".

A new US-Sino arms race? "Actually, we reduced the role of nuclear weapons to the historic minimum".

"But the idea that this need decisively devalues the INF Treaty seems - at the very least - premature", Sestanovich added.
