Killing of Jamal Khashoggi was premeditated - Saudi prosecutors

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman speaks during the Future Investment Initiative Forum in Riyadh Saudi Arabia Oct 24 2018

He said that Saudi authorities were working with Turkey to complete the investigations into the journalist's death.

"They (Saudis) do such a crime with a reliance on a superpower which supports them and does not let the global courts decide on any measures against them", he added.

Trump said he wanted to believe Prince Mohammed when he said that lower level officials were to blame for the killing at the Saudi mission.

"Those responsible will be held accountable".

He described cooperation between Riyadh and Ankara as "special" despite fierce criticism from Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his aides.

Khashoggi, a columnist for U.S. newspaper The Washington Post and a critic of the Saudi government, has been missing since his entry into the Saudi consulate in Turkey's Istanbul on Oct 2.

Trump, the kingdom's staunchest Western ally, was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying Prince Mohammed bore ultimate responsibility for the operation that led to Khashoggi's death.

But he suggested responsibility lay higher up: "Well, the prince is running things over there more so at this stage. He's running things and so if anybody were going to be, it would be him", Trump said.

Also on Thursday, Human Rights Watch said that Khashoggi's son, Salah, and his family have left Saudi Arabia for the United States after a travel ban on them was lifted.

A member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage on foreign trips was seen at the consulate before the Washington Post columnist's death.

Saudi state news agency SPA said on Thursday that Prince Mohammed had presided over the first meeting of a committee to carry out that restructuring.

The prince joked about Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's detention in the kingdom a year ago, saying he was free to leave after attending the worldwide investment conference in Riyadh.

He seemed relaxed on the panel he shared with Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa and Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri. "With all my freedom", he said. He rescinded his resignation.

"His very survival depends on Trump working with him", Indyk said of bin Salman.

Erdogan, who said Tuesday that the journalist had been the victim of a "ferocious" planned attack, has vowed to bring Khashoggi's killers to justice. Khashoggi, who lived in self-imposed exile in the United States for almost a year before his death, had written critically of Prince Mohammed's crackdown on dissent.

For Saudi Arabia's allies, the burning question has been whether they believe that Prince Mohammed, who has painted himself as a reformer, has any culpability in the killing, a possibility raised by several United States lawmakers.

The body parts of murdered dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi have been found at the Saudi consul general's home in Istanbul, a UK-based broadcaster reported on Tuesday. A key aide to the prince has also been fired over his suspected role in the killing.
