Obama rallying for Sen. Donnelly Sunday afternoon in Gary

Media more to blame for dividing US than Trump new poll suggests

"If we don't make any progress in this election, I don't know where we'll go from here", Reh said.

The previous year, Jessica Davis and Susan Oliver, the widows of Detective Michael Davis and Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver, were invited to Trump's address to Congress. Bracamontes' case - he was sentenced to death in March - also received steady coverage on Breitbart and other right-wing news sites.

As Americans participated in early voting this weekend, that same anxiety was palpable among some voters.

Here are five questions that could be answered on election night.

In 2010, former President Barack Obama's first midterm election was a rout for the Democrats, who lost control of the House in a 63-seat drubbing.

Chief among them is that Democrats could leverage their newfound subpoena power to investigate his administration.

Trump is trying to fire up his base - Republican voters frequently cite immigration as a top concern - as the GOP tries to retain control of the House and Senate.

The #metoo movement, which exploded during Trump's first year in office, has heightened awareness of the gender wage gap. The size of this "green wave" of cash has surprised and anxious Republicans.

Recent polling points to 40 or more too-close-to-call House races across the country, tempering earlier expectations of a huge blue wave of Democratic wins.

California's map has been more favorable to Democrats ever since re-districting in 2011 cost Republicans five seats.

Not the American Republic going to the polls to elect the entire House of Representatives, along with one-third of the Senate. Trump will tour the nation, landing him in Senate battlefields such as Indiana, Missouri, and Florida along with contests for governor in Georgia and Ohio. The president has been campaigning plenty in those places.

Though the southern border is far from West Virginia, Miller said illegal immigration is still an important topic to West Virginians. In the battlegrounds for the House - which are in mostly affluent, highly-educated suburbs - the key voter is an angry, college-educated white woman. In only one, North Dakota, do polls show the Democrat, Heidi Heitkamp, consistently trailing by a significant margin.

In Tennessee, Democrats had been hopeful about Phil Bredesen, a moderate, pro-business former governor. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz also remains the favorite for re-election, despite the energetic and well-funded campaign of Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke.

After 2016, it looked as if Trump was going to turn the battleground states of Iowa and OH red.

The worry on Team Trump is negative headlines coming at a time that is already pressure-packed. GOP candidates are struggling in races up and down the ballot in those two states.

At a rally in West Virginia Friday a defiant Trump brushed off the prospect of a Democratic House takeover.

So why aren't the Republicans poised to take better advantage of the thriving economy? Democrat enthusiasm is definitely there. Many of Trump's most ardent supporters, though, cited his endorsement of Morrisey as a big factor in their decisions, saying they may have liked Manchin in the past but could no longer count on him.

McDaniel added that the fact that Republicans have a chance of keeping the House and a strong shot at holding control in the Senate means President Donald Trump could defy the historical trend of presidents seeing their party lose a significant number of seats in Congress in midterm elections.

Every midterm is a referendum on the president and his party, and Trump has embraced that dynamic more enthusiastically than any previous president. He tells audiences that though he's not on the ballot, they should vote as if he were (though his approval ratings are in the low 40s).

In the past, presidents have had trouble transferring their popularity in midterm elections - it's usually a president's unpopularity that motivates the other side's voters.

In the neighboring western states of Nevada and Arizona, the Democratic strategy for flipping Republican Senate seats in the Trump era is moving in opposite directions.

Two of the most-watched races in the country are in Florida.
