78 students kidnapped by gunmen from Christian school

Seventy-nine pupils were kidnapped in Cameroon

Some 80 people, mostly school children, were kidnapped in the city of Bamenda in northwest Cameroon early on Monday, government and military sources told Reuters.

A video uploaded to social media showed the kidnapped children and the alleged kidnappers, calling themselves "Amba boys" in reference to the breakaway Ambazonia state that the separatists have been trying to create. Reportedly, the attack took place in Nkwen village, which is an English-speaking region where separatists are fighting to form an independent state and want to call it Ambazonia.

In the video, the kidnappers forced several of the young male students to give their names and the names of their parents. "You will be going to school now here", the men say, according to the news service. Many people have fled Bamenda and other centres to seek refuge in more peaceful Francophone regions.

Cameroon's authorities have blamed the kidnap on Anglophone separatist militias - who have called for schools in English-speaking regions to be closed.

The crisis started as an industrial strike by lawyers and teachers in 2016, but snowballed into an internal armed conflict since previous year when separatists joined and symbolically declared the independence of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia. "Let us keep praying", Samuel Fonki, a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, said, two days after they were taken into the bush by armed men.

It comes after elections on October 7 that saw President Paul Biya, 85, who has ruled the country with an iron fist for 35 years, secure a seventh term in office.

"We shall only release you after the struggle".

"Praise God 78 children and the driver have been released", Rev. Forba said.

A miltary source said the principal of the school had also been kidnapped.

They have decreed a boycott of schools, saying that the French-speaking education system marginalises anglophone students.

A government spokesperson said it was keeping track of developments surrounding the kidnapping, but provided no other details. Neither the government nor the separatist groups provided evidence to substantiate their accusations. They have torched at least a hundred schools and chased students and teachers from schools that they then take over as training grounds.

Last week, separatist militants attacked workers on a state-run rubber plantation in southwestern Cameroon, allegedly chopping off their fingers because the men defied an order to stay away from the farms.
