USA midterms: Candidates who made history

Ayanna Pressley talks with reporters outside the Adams Street Library in Dorchester

The "women's wave" included MA, where Democrat Ayanna Pressley was elected by Seventh District voters to be the first African-American woman to represent the state as a House member.

What is already the most diverse Congress ever will become even more so after Tuesday's elections, which broke barriers of race and gender.

Democrats Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI will be the first Muslim women to serve in Congress, while Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley will represent Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District in the next Congress.

Among this new class, history was made in pairs: American voters elected the two first ever Latinas to represent Texas, the first Muslim American women in Congress, and the first Native American women in Congress. Iowa elected its first female governor, Kim Reynolds (who was the incumbent but she had been appointed to the position), along with its first-ever female state representatives, 29-year-old Abby Finkenauer and Cindy Axne, both of whom beat out their male Republican incumbent opponents. Two others - Sharice Davids in Kansas' 3rd District and Deb Haaland in New Mexico's 1st District - will become the first Native American women in the chamber.

Last night, Donna Brazille, a strategist on CNN said a record number of 38 women of color will be serving in Congress (35 Democrats, three Republicans).

Sylvia Garcia and Veronica Escobar are the first Latinas to represent the state of Texas in the House of Representatives, after the state has sent more than 300 people to lower body of Congress since it joined the union in 1845.

A "pink wave" is sending a record number of women to Congress, with more than 110 claiming victory in their House and Senate races-with some contests too close yet to call. And she's a former MMA fighter, as well.

On Tuesday night Stevens, a 35-year old who served on Obama's Auto Task Force, won her race to represent Michigan's 11th district.

For the first time in history, more than 100 women won races for Congress, and at least nine won governorship.

While women gained in the House, results were still uncertain in the Senate, where there are now 23 women serving.

"This isn't just the year of the woman, this is the year of every woman", said Cecile Richards, who served as the president of Planned Parenthood for more than a decade, noting the groundbreaking diversity among the women who have run for office this year.

These wins were mostly fueled by the Democratic Party, which put a record numbers of women on the ballot.

In Colorado, Jared Polis will be the country's first openly gay man elected governor.

Some conservatives on social media saw the irony of blaming white women for voting for a Hispanic candidate, simply because he's Republican.

Nearly 80% of voters in a CNN exit poll said it's very or somewhat important that more women and racial minorities be elected to public office, with two-thirds of white voters agreeing.

16 women nominated for Governor (of the 36 states electing one today).

Women won big in the US midterm elections on Tuesday (November 6), with USA media predicting more than 100 women winning election or re-election in races across the country.
