20% Rise in Insulin Use by 2030, Study Says

A new study says that by 2030 79 million adults with type 2 diabetes will need insulin but only half will be able to get an adequate supply

The expected increase in the demand of insulin in the coming 12 years, and the incidence of type-2 diabetes, signalled grave shortage of insulin to treat the patients.

"Many people with diabetes are experiencing increased burdens due to the high out-of-pocket costs for insulin, which can negatively impact their lives and health", said Cefalu in a statement in May.

In the next 12 years, half of those with type 2 diabetes won't be able to receive potentially life-saving insulin unless access to the drug improves, new research shows.

"These estimates suggest that current levels of insulin access are highly inadequate compared to projected need, particularly in Africa and Asia, and more efforts should be devoted to overcoming this looming health challenge", said Sanjay Basu, lead author on the study and an assistant professor of medicine at Stanford, in a statement. Major insulin has been manufactured in pharmaceutical companies and the continual rise in price has raised human concerns. The most prevalent type is type 2 diabetes, which usually affects adults but is more often seen now in younger individuals as well.

The study, which used data representing over 60% of the global population with type 2 diabetes, estimates that the number of adults with type 2 diabetes is set to rise to 511 million in 2030.

At the same time, global insulin use is projected to rise from 526 million 1000-unit vials in 2018 to 634 million in 2030, and will be highest in Asia (322 million vials in 2030) and lowest in Oceania (4 million) (table 2).

Inspite of UN's dedication to cure non-communicable illnesses and safeguard comprehensive acquisition to drugs for diabetes covering much of the world insulin is scarce and needlessly arduous for patients to obtain.

The researchers conclude in the journal The Lancet that of all these diabetes patients, 79 million would actually be in need of insulin to manage their diabetes.

The study also predicts using a higher treatment target for A1C levels, a measure for tracking blood glucose, could reduce the number of people who need to use insulin.

"These estimates suggest that current levels of insulin access are highly inadequate compared to projected need, particularly in Africa and Asia, and more efforts should be devoted to overcoming this looming health challenge", said Dr Sanjay Basu, assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University in the USA, who led the research.

"Unless governments begin initiatives to make insulin available and affordable, then its use is always going to be far from optimal", said Basu.

In 2016 an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that the drug's price nearly tripled between 2002 and 2013.
