Sanchez out for up to 10 games, reveals Mourinho

He last started in the victory at Juventus in the Champions League on November 7.

That means the 29-year-old will miss Saturday evening's trip to the south coast to take on Southampton while he will also be ruled out of the crucial clash with former club Arsenal at Old Trafford next Wednesday night.

Sanchez is yet to have a scan to determine the extent of the damage but Mourinho said he was "screaming" in pain.

It is the latest injury to trouble Sanchez this season, the forward having been sidelined with an abdominal strain at the start of the campaign and a groin issue last month. It is, for me and also for Alexis, the feelings before the scans is that the grade [of tear] is different than the Lindelof one and the Lindelof one was not an easy one so Alexis has what I used to call an aggressive muscular injury.

"It is not a little muscular injury from which he will be ready in a week or 10 days", he added.

Manchester United's stars arrived at Carrington for training on Friday ahead of facing Southampton - with one notable exception.

United now sit seventh and are seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, yet Mourinho is hopeful of a concerted effort to push up the table, having already sealed their place in the Champions League knockout stages.

Mourinho's team have conceded five goals in the opening 15 minutes of games this season, a joint high with Fulham and Cardiff, and the Portuguese coach has asked for a fast start at St Mary's.

"We can now just focus on the Premier League and we need points".

Mourinho also offered up another encouraging update on the future of United keeper David de Gea, after the club activated the one-year option they had in his contract that ties him to the club until 2020.

"We have the best goalkeeper in the world", Mourinho said.

"Board want him to stay". "His agent will let him think and decide himself. Just my feeling, they are going to finish well".
