US, China Tensions Cast Shadow As World Leaders Meet In Argentina

Anti-Globalist Protests in Argentina Amid G20 Summit Held Without Incidents- Minister

A summit of the world's top economies will open on Friday with leaders struggling over fallout from a US-China trade war that has roiled global markets and bracing for the kind of divisive geopolitical drama that President Donald Trump often brings to the worldwide stage.

The leaders of the world's largest economies opened talks on Friday overshadowed by US President Donald Trump's threat to escalate tariffs on imports from China as well as military tensions between Russian Federation and Ukraine.

The leaders of countries representing four-fifths of the global economy opened a two-day meeting in Argentina facing the deepest fractures since the first G20 summit convened 10 years ago in the throes of financial crisis.

Xi and Trump are scheduled to have a dinner on Saturday evening to talk about their trade differences and potentially call a ceasefire in the ongoing trade war between the two countries.

Moon's top press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, was quoted by the South's Yonhap news agency saying that Trump "asked that South Korea and the USA closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula".

In a pair of tweets, Trump cited a long-standing 25-percent tariff on trucks as the reason trucks sell do so well for American automakers. "There's some good signs", he said. The president told reporters, "We're going to be talking about lots of good things for Argentina, for the United States, including trade, including military purchases, and other things". "I think I understood you better in your language than I did on this, but that's OK", Trump told Macri and then dropped his earpiece on the floor.

"There are some ... things in there that I think Democrats can support", Ms O'Neil said.

Erdoğan received Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a meeting that lasted 40 minutes on December 1.

Separately, US trade representative Robert Lighthizer said he was examining options to raise US tariffs on Chinese vehicles to 40% - the level Beijing charges on US-made cars. "Way, way, way above my pay grade", he said.

"It's not just for our people, all of the G20 nations have benefited so significantly by their exchanges and trade with each other".

The United States has cast talks Saturday with Xi as a deadline for China to cave on key trade concerns of Trump, who has slapped $250 billion in tariffs on the Asian power.

An Argentinian official quickly denied the claims to the South China Morning Post, saying that Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders' remarks only "reflected the person's own view".

He said the European Union is expected to extend sanctions on Moscow over its "totally unacceptable" seizure of Ukrainian ships and their crews near the Crimean Peninsula.

While Trump's meeting with Xi is all but certain to go ahead, the USA president on Thursday abruptly scrapped his planned talks with Putin, citing Russia's recent seizure of Ukrainian vessels.

The cancellation of Friday's Putin meeting was ordered in an apparently abrupt decision aboard Air Force One as Trump flew from Washington on Thursday. It's in these sessions that he's most likely to run across Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who most of the world has castigated after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Human Rights Watch asked Argentine prosecutors to investigate him for human rights abuses.

As soon as he arrived, Prince Mohammed was confronted by French President Emmanuel Macron, who pressed him on the Khashoggi investigation and the Saudi-backed war in Yemen. The Saudi foreign ministry said the prince had meetings with his French, South Korean and Mexican counterparts.
