Beijing separates Huawei CFO’s arrest from USA trade talks

A Huawei logo is seen at a Huawei store at a shopping mall in Beijing Wednesday

"The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", said a statement from Huawei. It's also making it harder for Chinese firms to invest in USA companies or to buy American technology in such cutting-edge areas as robotics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. The Trump administration says they benefit from improper subsidies and market barriers.

Officials discovered ZTE was selling its products with US technology to Iran and North Korea.

Red notices are not typically made public, but a person may be arrested on the basis of a red notice as soon as that person arrives at a border crossing or airport in a third country that does have an extradition treaty with the United States.

The ar‌‌re‌s‌t was praised by at least one American official, Republican Senator Ben Sasse (Nebraska), who, in a statement, accused China of undermining the "national security interests" of the U.S."Sometimes Chinese aggression is explicitly state-sponsored and sometimes it's laundered through many of Beijing's so-called "private" sector entities that are in bed with [Chinese President] Xi's communist party", said Sasse. Bolton told NPR earlier Thursday he "knew in advance", but his spokesperson said the comment referred to the briefing Bolton received before news reports surfaced about the arrest.

Observers believe the a‌r‌r‌es‌‌t could further complicate the already tumultuous trade talks between China and the United States. The Globe and Mail newspaper, citing law enforcement sources, said she is accused of trying to evade USA curbs on trade with Iran.

"I can assure everyone that we are a country of an independent judiciary and the appropriate authorities took the decisions in this case without any political involvement or interference", Trudeau said.

That view is shared by other worldwide security analysts after Canada's Justice Department said the U.S.is seeking Meng's extradition.

Trump did not know about the arrest in advance, two US officials said on Thursday, in an apparent attempt to stop the incident from impeding talks to resolve the trade dispute.

In the view of the United States and many outside analysts, China has embarked on an aggressive drive to overtake America's dominance in technology and global economic leadership.

Japan's Nikkei .N225 shed 1.9 percent, closing at its lowest level since October 30, with semi-conductor related shares leading the losses. The Dow Jones dropped about 3 percent, or 750 points by late morning trading.

Chinese Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters Thursday that the Chinese government also wants Canadian officials to reveal the reasoning.

Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman Gao Feng said China is confident it can reach a deal during the 90 days that Trump agreed to suspend a scheduled increase in US import taxes on $200 billion worth of Chinese products. More recently, the probe has included the company's use of HSBC Holdings Plc to make illegal transactions involving Iran, people familiar with the investigation said.

Meng's arrest also comes as the U.S. and China try to smooth tensions in an effort to prevent a mounting trade war.

Trump's tariff hikes on Chinese imports stemmed from complaints Beijing steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology.

How do USA authorities arrange arrests in foreign countries?

"The United States is stepping up containment of China in all respects", said Zhu Feng, an global relations expert at Nanjing University. "That could include tit for tat moves against Canadians", he said.

He said Meng would likely be returned to detention if there was no decision on bail.

If Huawei is totally excluded from USA markets, as a result of this latest development, the chances are extremely high that China will retaliate in kind, excluding major USA tech companies from its markets.

On Wednesday, British phone carrier BT said it was removing Huawei equipment from the core of its mobile phone networks. Washington has been pushing other countries not to buy the equipment from Huawei, arguing that the company may be working stealthily for Beijing's spymasters.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that US authorities were investigating whether the Chinese tech giant had violated sanctions on Iran.

Markets had initially brightened this week after US and Chinese leaders agreed a temporary trade truce at a meeting on Saturday.

Huawei is under intense scrutiny from Washington and other governments over its ties to the Chinese government, driven by concerns it could be used for spying. Trump restored access after ZTE agreed to pay a $1 billion fine, replace its executive team and embed a USA -chosen compliance team in the company.
