Kremlin Lawyer From Trump Tower Meeting Charged With Obstructing Money Laundering Investigation

8 2016 shows Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya speaking during an interview in Moscow. The bombshell revelation that President Donald Trump's oldest son Don Jr. met with a Kremlin-tied Russian lawyer hawking damaging

Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who met with Donald Trump Jr. and others at Trump Tower in Manhattan on June 9, 2016, represented Prevezon Holdings in a civil case in which the US attorney's office in Manhattan sought millions of dollars in forfeiture from the company and others. In her own declaration, Veselnitskaya stated that she had "gone to great lengths" to get a copy of a document from the Russian prosecutors' office.

Federal prosecutors in NY said they were not aware of any defense attorney retained by Veselnitskaya, and ABC News requests for comment from her Russian office were not immediately returned.

But the indictment could nevertheless prove significant for solidifying the notion that she was an agent of the Kremlin at the same time she was at the meeting with Trump campaign aides, some former federal prosecutors said.

You can read the indictment for yourself here.

While Veselnitskaya's close ties to the Russian government have been well-documented, Tuesday's indictment describes her as a co-conspirator with Russian prosecutors to obstruct the USA investigation. Also attending that meeting was Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. In the meeting attended by Donald Trump Jr. and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Veselnitskaya brought up the Magnitsky Act instead of the "dirt" on Hillary Clinton she offered to secure the appointment.

Magnitsky was arrested in Russian Federation and died in custody in 2009.

Veselnitskaya, a 43-year-old attorney based in Russian Federation, did not respond to a telephone call and text message from The Associated Press.

The indictment was filed under seal in December and publicly announced Tuesday by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman.

The court case originated in September 2013, when US prosecutors sued to recover millions of dollars worth of NY real estate and other property on the grounds that it was tainted by a money laundering scheme.

Prosecutors accuse Veselnitskaya of lying about her cooperation with a "senior Russian prosecutor" in drafting "supposed investigative findings" for an asset forfeiture case in NY federal court.

Russian prosecutors accuse Magnitsky of participating in the largest tax fraud in Russian history worth $200 million. The incident sparked the U.S.to pass the Magnitsky Act, which allowed the U.S.to sanction officials found to have committed human rights violations in Russian Federation.

The U.S. government accused Prevezon of laundering more than $230 million in stolen Russian tax funds out of the country into bank accounts and other assets around the world, including NY luxury apartments.

Katzyv eventually settled the case by paying $6 million without an admission of guilt.

A source close to Veselnitskaya told Foreign Policy that the Russian attorney "saw no difference between her client and the Russian government".

It is not unusual for US prosecutors to reach out in good faith to their counterparts in other countries to request information when working on transnational cases.
