May turns to trade unions in plea for Brexit backing

Houses of Parliament

Mrs May retorted: "The only way to avoid no-deal is to vote for the deal".

It followed a defeat on Tuesday when the Commons voted to undermine her preparations for a no-deal exit from the bloc.

Theresa May has already withdrawn one vote on her Brexit deal in December, and, given the catastrophic ramifications of any defeat for her grip on power, many are already speculating that she will again pull January's vote. She was expected to lose that vote by a massive majority.

In the Commons, Tory anger was directed at the Speaker, who many MPs have long suspected is unduly sympathetic to the Remain cause.

A number of Labour MPs in Leave-supporting constituencies back Mr Mann's amendment, which the MP said would open up the opportunity for other improvements to the prime minister's deal.

But Bercow, who won equally noisy support from Labour MPs and some remain-minded Conservatives, insisted that he could make the decision and that he would side with the interests of parliament over the executive.

The withdrawal agreement between the United Kingdom and European Union - covering things like the "divorce bill", expat citizens' rights and a 20-month transition period - will only come into force if MPs back it in a vote.

Japan's ambassador to Britain, Koji Tsuruoka, issued a blunt warning about Brexit last February when he said Japanese companies would have to leave Britain if trade barriers made them unprofitable.

"We need to come together, we need to do a deal".

The furore over Speaker John Bercow's decision to allow a vote on a Brexit amendment leads numerous front pages on Thursday. May had been working on the assumption that Bercow would discard the amendment for procedural reasons, as was his prerogative. But such is the crisis of the British bourgeoisie engendered by Brexit that Bercow, a Remain supporter whose wife had a "Bollocks to Brexit" sticker in her auto, deemed it necessary to come forward and give the Remain camp a shot in the arm. By convention, only ministers can change a business motion.

Andrea Leadsom, the leader of the House of Commons, said Bercow should publish the advice he received from the Commons clerks. The Commons will now "have a chance to vote on alternative policies".

"So we´re going to have to look at what are the available options that realistically are still on the table".

Labour MP Martin Whitfield, a supporter of the Best for Britain campaign for another referendum, said: "It is humiliating for the prime minster to be told to her face that the whole world wants to avoid a no-deal scenario, yet she still refuses to rule it out".

His intervention is the most significant from a cabinet minister acknowledging that a no deal Brexit could be blocked.

In recent weeks, Corbyn has repeatedly stated his preference for bringing about May's downfall via a general election.

In a speech on Friday, it's director general, Carolyn Fairbairn is set to call on MPs to "safeguard the security and prosperity of our country" and put jobs and the economy ahead of politics when they vote on Tuesday.

Despite the unprecedented crisis facing May, Corbyn has steadfastly refused to do this.

But her spokesman added: "If that were not to take place. we would respond quickly and provide certainty on the way forward".

It would be "a disastrous situation in which we move to the most rudimentary terms of trade with our closest partners", he told BBC radio. "Obviously, the next thing to do immediately after that is for there to be a vote of confidence in the government".

Labour has said it will seek a confidence vote in the government if it loses next week, and is also likely to press for a general election.

"It merely requires a motion to be tabled not even debated", he said.

She was one of 213 MPs across the parties raising concerns. These are the forces he allows to dictate events thanks to his refusal to mobilise the massive opposition to the Labour right wing and his non-stop efforts to convince the ruling class that he can be trusted with the fate of British capitalism.

Crucially, MPs will be able to make and vote on amendments to this Brexit Plan B, opening the door for a second referendum to be put to the Commons.

'We are doing everything we can to win the meaningful vote on Tuesday, ' the source said.
