China, US trade talks end in Beijing

China Promised The US A Lot On Trade, And Trump Team Is Holding Its Feet To The Fire To Follow Through

Asked about China's stance on issues such as forced technology transfers, intellectual property rights, tariff barriers and cyber attacks, and whether China was confident it could reach agreement with the United States, Gao said those issues "were an important part of this trade talk".

The 90-day time frame is a tight window in which to nail down deep changes to China's economic model, reforms which past US administrations advocated for years and USA lawmakers on both sides of the aisle support.

As per the Chinese Commerce Ministry statement, both countries "conducted extensive, in-depth and meticulous exchanges on trade issues and structural issues of common concern, which enhanced mutual understanding and laid the foundation for resolving mutual concerns".

Nevertheless, it sent a message that the United States needs China's assistance on North Korea which could be in jeopardy if Washington keeps pressing on trade.

The two governments have announced no details, but Asian stock markets rose on news the negotiations that originally were planned for two days were extended.

The discussions during the past two days "went well", according to Steven Winberg, an Energy Department official who spoke to reporters in Beijing.

The USTR gave no indication as to what, if any, new agreements had been made during the latest round of talks, but its statement said the US side pushed verification and enforcement of previous agreements.

Some analysts say that China - Pyongyang's key diplomatic ally and main source of trade - could use Kim's visit as a bargaining chip in the U.S. trade talks.

China has imposed penalties on $110 billion of American goods, slowing customs clearance for USA companies and suspending issuing licenses in finance and other businesses.

Washington wants Beijing to change its plans to use government support to make Chinese companies world leaders in robotics and advanced technologies.

"We can confidently say that enough progress was made that the discussions will continue at a higher level", said Craig Allen, president of the U.S.

They were the first face-to-face meetings since Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump brokered a 90-day ceasefire in trade hostilities in December.

"The China talks are going very well", he said.

For their part, Chinese officials are unhappy with US curbs on exports of "dual use" technology with possible military applications.

U.S. officials have long complained that China has failed to live up to trade promises, often citing Beijing's pledges to resume imports of American beef that took more than a decade to implement. Among many things, the Communist leader pledged to buy more US agricultural and industrial products, allow increased access to Chinese markets, and abide by more cybersecurity and property theft rules.

Darson Chiu, an economist and research fellow at the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, said the pledges China made looked similar to those it had offered earlier past year. The move prompted China to increase tariffs on Dollars 110 billion of U.S. goods.

The United States and China had been engaged in a trade war over the past year after United States President Donald Trump accused Beijing of indulging in unfair trade practices. USA government data shows the Asian nation scooped up more than 2.6 million metric tons of beans in December and at least another 1.3 million were sold this year, according to people familiar with the matter.

As the trade talks wound down, China's top economic official, Premier Li Keqiang, met with CEO Elon Musk of electric auto brand Tesla Inc.

Liu's appearance at the talks is a "symbol of Xi's personal buy-in" in the effort to reach a deal, said Leland Miller, chief executive officer of China Beige Book, a data-analytics firm that surveys companies across the Chinese economy.
