Huawei uproar widens as Poland arrests two in China-spying probe

Polish authorities have reportedly arrested Huawei's sales director and an ex-security agency staffer on allegations of spying.

Huawei told Reuters it was aware of the situation, but had no immediate comment.

Wang, Polish state police reported after searching his home and detaining him (which could last as long as three months with a conviction going as long as 10 years), is the sales director in Poland for Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.

The accusations add to Huawei's troubles of late as Western governments grow anxious that Huawei's systems could be used by Chinese intelligence.

Orange, a leading telecommunications company in Poland, says it's cooperating with the Polish security services who say a Polish employee at the company and a Chinese manager for tech giant Huawei have been accused of spying on Poland for China.

He said no further details would be released about the case because it is classified and the investigation is ongoing.

Poland is Huawei's headquarters for Central and Eastern Europe and the Nordic region.

As word broke Friday that a Chinese citizen named Weijing Wang had been arrested in Poland for spying, it's likely few people in the United States even heard about it, much less realized the arrest may be closely monitored by conservative political operatives stateside, and possibly even have implications for the average person living in America.

Local media identified the Chinese man as a Huawei official but the company has not confirmed the claim.

They were detained by Poland's Internal Security Agency, TVP Info reported. Various countries, including the Britain, France, Germany, Norway, have publicly raised concerns about using Huawei equipment for next-generation mobile networks. The other detained person is a former high-rank official at Poland's internal security agency who worked at mobile phone operator Orange Polska SA, the broadcaster said.

Canadian police arrested Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, on December 1 in Vancouver at the request of the United States.

Norway's comments come at a time in the country is seeking to stamp out vulnerabilities in its telecoms networks.

Authorities also arrested a former Polish government official on similar charges. "Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based", the statement said. Orange told the AP it did not know if the suspicions against its employee were related to his work at Orange.

Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the company founder, as she transited through the country. In New Zealand, the Government Communications Security Bureau turned down Spark's bid to use Huawei equipment on the new 5G network in November.
