Syria intercepts Israeli missiles fired toward Damascus

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed not to let Tehran - a supporter of President Assad - entrench itself militarily in the war-torn country.

"We worked with impressive success to block Iran's military entrenchment in Syria", Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

"The backlog of recent attack proves that we are more determined than ever to act against Iran in Syria", he added.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said airstrikes targeted an area near the airport while others hit the area of Kiswa, which is home to positions and storage sites for Iranian and Hezbollah terror forces allied with Syria's government.

On Friday, Syrian state news agency SANA reported that the country's air defenses intercepted missiles fired at the Damascus worldwide airport at around 11:00 p.m. local time, with a military source attributing the attack to Israel.

The ministry urged the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities to deter such attacks by Israel.

According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, Israel's continued aggression is possible only thanks to the "military, political and media cover provided by the USA administration".

Syrian air defence batteries opened up on "enemy targets" near Damascus Friday, the official news agency SANA reported. Many defense analysts believe to be false or overstated, the Times of Israel reported.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Israel was behind a series of airstrikes targeting "Iranian warehouses" at Syria's Damascus worldwide airport overnight Friday.

In October, Moscow equipped Damascus with the advanced S-300 surface-to-air missiles, days after Israeli fighter jets attacked Syrian targets using a Russian surveillance plane flying nearby as a shield and hence misleading the Syrian air defenses to shoot it down.

Outgoing IDF chief Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot appeared at his final cabinet meeting, ending a four-year term and 40-year army career.
