Support For Border Wall Jumps As More Americans Blame Trump For Shutdown

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump denied "chaos" in the White House amid the ongoing government shutdown, claiming on Saturday that there's "almost nobody in the W.H. but me".

The Washington Post reports that Americans are nearly evenly split on whether they support a solid wall along the United States' southern border, up from the beginning of the immigration battle between Democrats and Republicans in Congress.

The partial government shutdown is now in its fourth week, the longest in US history.

"Elections have consequences!" he declared, meaning the 2016 election in which "I promised safety and security" and, as part of that, a border wall.

The last week has been contentious between Republicans and Democrats, as witnessed Wednesday when Trump walked out of a White House meeting with congressional leadership after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the president "no" she would not support funding a border wall.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said he encouraged Trump during a telephone conversation Sunday to reopen government for a short period to try to negotiate a deal with Democrats.

The previous record dates back to the Clinton administration when a 21-day shutdown resulted from a clash between President Bill Clinton and the GOP Congress that lasted from December 1995 to January 1996. "We will be out for a long time unless the Democrats come back from their "vacations" and get back to work".

"I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked".

Instead, the president urged lawmakers to provide him the $5.7 billion he is seeking for border security.

The agents are "essential" federal workers and expected to work but many are calling in sick in protest at the situation, the Miami Herald reports.

Only 18 percent in this poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates, said they've personally been affected by the partial shutdown. On the divisive issue of the border wall with Mexico, however, support for the wall has strengthened among Republicans: eight out of ten favor the wall.

Pelosi argued that Trump is merely trying to steer attention away from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and other White House problems.

One close Trump ally, Republican Representative Mark Meadows of North Carolina, said Friday that he believed Trump was getting closer to declaring an emergency.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request to clarify who is now in the White House with the president.

And Trump's stated reason for shutting down the government, securing funds for a border wall, also polled poorly.

Mr Trump continued to blame Democrats for the impasse. Both sides should agree to reopen the government and work toward a compromise on border security so 800,000 federal workers don't have to go without pay. "I don't want to give them an easy way out".

Mr Trump has kept Washington on edge over whether he would resort to such a declaration, citing what he says is a "crisis" of drug smuggling and the trafficking of women and children at the border. Second, inevitable legal challenges would send the matter to court, allowing Trump to continue the fight for the wall - and continue to excite his supporters - while not actually closing the government or immediately requiring him to start construction.
