Barty reaches Melbourne quarters with win over Sharapova

Caroline Wozniacki comments on her relationship with Maria Sharapova

I was not playing the tennis that I can play. Didn't want to watch tennis, or even talk about the sport.

If she could reach Saturday's final she would play on the same day as her former cricket team, Brisbane Heat, turn out in the Women's Big Bash League final. She hit every ball in the court.

"Camera driver got his license on a weet-bix packet?", said one Twitter user in re-posting video of the near-miss, while another tweeted: "Dear oh dear, out of control spider cam - yikes!" I definitely had a let-down for many games straight, gave her that confidence, and she's a confidence player, as well. 'There is absolutely nothing better'. Other local celebrities were in the crowd and Prime Minister Scott Morrison was courtside in his green Aussie cap and with his family. It was in vogue for Aussies to be watching.

There hasn't been an Australian victor of the home Grand Slam in 41 years, since Chris O'Neil won the women's title on grass in 1978.

No Australian woman has won at their home Slam since Christine O'Neil in 1978 and no man since Mark Edmondson in 1976.

Tiafoe, who received treatment on his right forearm at the end of the third set, broke Dimitrov's serve in the 11th game of the fourth then held serve to end the 3-hour, 39-minute match.

After losing a tight first set, she went on a nine-game winning streak to take the second before holding off the Russian in the third. That's a rarity for the five-time Grand Slam victor in these parts.

A comeback was always on the cards, though, and Sharapova pushed it the distance.

Sharapova, who won here in 2008 was looking for her first quarterfinal in Melbourne since 2016 after ousting Caroline Wozniacki, the defending champion, in three sets last round.

Barty was elated but the celebrations contained. One more match point came and went, thanks to Barty's error but on her fourth match point, Barty sealed the win with an ace.

It's a bit of a theme for Barty. "I put a lot of pressure on her".

"I think it would be tough for me to be doing all the work and putting in all the effort if I didn't really believe that", she said.

"She's pretty chilled out, very easy-going, easy to hang around with". They're not in the locker room, not that I know of, ' she smiled.

"Yeah, for me, having that 18 months off was vital".

Barty's best previous Grand Slam singles result was the third round at the 2017 Australian Open.

"I have never quite played in Rod Laver when it's been that full, especially against a champion like Maria who has proven that she can come back from any deficit", Barty said.

"But there are no secrets in tennis".

'I think I'd be kidding myself'.
