Trump offers a ‘Dreamers’ deal for border-money proposal

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Calif. center speaks about her oath of office as she stands next to Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer of N.Y. left and Sen. Dick Durbin D-Ill. right following their meeting with President Donald Trump at the Wh

"It's three-year relief for TPS and DACA", Pence said.

Instead, in offering temporary protections for about 1 million immigrants at risk of deportation in exchange for funding for a wall, Trump did something rarely seen during his presidency.

Pelosi called the deal and "non-starter". Leaders insisted Trump needs to open the government before beginning any negotiations over border security or barrier funding.

President Donald Trump on Sunday appeared to threaten to target millions of people living in the country illegally if he doesn't get funding for his border wall. The American people should weigh in by calling their representatives and challenging them to engage in good faith and act.

Some 800,000 federal workers have been staying home on furlough or working without pay.

The New York Democrat said there is only "one way out" of the shutdown. "Put the people back to work, and let's negotiate border security, but don't hold those 800,000 employees hostage in this situation".

Trump's son-in-law and senior aide, Jared Kushner, has led the work on the proposals, said three people familiar with White House thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly.

On Saturday, President Trump addressed America in what was one of the steadiest and strongest speeches he has delivered in the first two years of his administration. "I will be very curious to see how the Democrats-especially in the Senate-choose to deal with this piece of legislation".

The party took over control of the House this year, while Mr Trump's Republicans still have a majority in the Senate.

"I'm not going to get ahead of the President but I can assure he's going to continue fighting for border security, he's going to continue looking for the solution to end the humanitarian and national security crisis at the border", Sanders told reporters at the White House. But while Trump cast the move as a "common-sense compromise", Democrats were quick to dismiss it as a "non-starter".

The unusual time for "a major announcement", a Saturday afternoon, over a government shutdown that has already stretched four weeks since December 22 - the longest in USA history - has pundits a-twitter over what he's going to announce. But, the decision was challenged in court and is now held up in legal proceedings.

"No, Amnesty is not a part of my offer".

It continued, "We would be glad to review, starting this week, any proposals he has to responsibly improve and increase border security and provide certainty to TPS recipients and DREAMers". Democrats contend that Trump's push for the wall is immoral and that it is an ineffective way to stop illegal crossings.

While Trump's statistics on heroin deaths are true, it's unclear what a border wall would do to reduce the amount of heroin coming across the border.

If Democrats refuse to even come to the table to debate and amend the proposed bill, they risk the label of politically irrational and personally irresponsible when it comes to dealing with these serious issues.

It was the latest turn - and potentially the most unsafe - in the high-stakes brinkmanship between Trump and Pelosi that has been playing out against the stalled negotiations over how to end the partial government shutdown. Pelosi and McConnell should take their places, C-SPAN should ready the cameras for the nation to watch and the president should ready his pen to sign a bipartisan solution into law.

The government has been partially shut down for weeks during this standoff.

Trump has struggled to find a way out of a four-week partial government shutdown over his demand to construct a wall between the USA and Mexico.

The President's latest offer, which he is set to deliver from the White House Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, will link his demand for $5.7 billion for a border wall to the BRIDGE Act, legislation that would extend protections for so-called "Dreamers", undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as children and are covered by the DACA program.

A key point they are now rejecting (that they previously begged for-though this is the third time the President has offered it) is an extension of protections on almost 700,000 "dreamers" (non-citizens who entered the country illegally but of no fault of their own due to ages at the time.) Rejecting these protections now for a third time, DACA kids really should ask themselves, "Who in this debate is honestly thinking about what's best for me?"
