USA charges China's Huawei with fraud, theft

Conservatives slam Liberals for handling of Meng Wanzhou case

The 13-count filing in Brooklyn against Huawei and its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou accuses the company of committing bank and wire fraud to circumvent USA sanctions against Iran that prohibit the export of goods and technologies originating from the U.S.

In a separate case, the Justice Department said Huawei stole robotic technology from carrier T-Mobile US Inc.

Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, right, wipes his brow after announcing an indictment on violations including bank and wire fraud, Monday, Jan. 28, 2019, of Chines telecommunications companies including Huawei, at the Justice Department in Washington.

Whitaker and Wray were joined by Department of Homeland (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and several US attorneys for the announcement at DOJ headquarters.

"The criminal activity in this indictment goes back ten years and goes all the way to the top of the company", said Whitaker.

The chance you'll see Huawei phones and routers in the U.S. grew bleaker today, as Chinese telecom firm has officially been criminally charged by the USA government.

Meng Wanzhou has been officially charged two months after she was arrested at the Vancouver Airport.

Meng in particular "repeatedly lied" to bankers about the relationships between the companies, especially with Skycom, a Huawei affiliate in Iran, according to the charges.

The indictment alleges that Huawei, two affiliated companies, and its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou committed fraud and conspiracy in connection with deals in Iran.

Secretary Nielsen said that Huawei's behaviour wasn't "just illegal but also detrimental to the national security of the US" and that the U.S. would "not tolerate a regime that supports terrorism".

The US said it would proceed with her formal extradition, a move certain to ratchet up tensions with China. The efforts allegedly began in 2012.

Meng, Huawei's CFO, is charged with bank fraud, wire fraud and conspiracies to commit bank and wire fraud.

T-Mobile had accused Huawei of stealing the technology called "Tappy" which mimicked human fingers and was used to test smartphones.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will take part in the two days of talks beginning Wednesday, along with the president's economic adviser Larry Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro.

Meng has said that she is innocent and Huawei did not respond to requests for comment on the charges announced Monday.

Huawei's founder, Ren Zhengfei, denies his company's products would be used by the Chinese government to spy. At issue are allegations that Chinese companies are stealing intellectual property from US tech companies.

A 13-count indictment was unsealed earlier today in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, charging four defendants, including Huawei Technologies Co. The case strained Chinese relations with both the United States and Canada.
