Schumer asks intel chiefs to educate Trump after 'extraordinarily inappropriate' criticism

Dan Coats, Director of National Intelligence, along with the chiefs of five other top intelligence agencies, delivered the grim assessment to lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee, saying: "We face significant changes in the domestic and global environment that has resulted in an increasingly complex and uncertain world and we must be ready".

Haspel also said Iran's leadership is assessing whether it should continue to abide by the nuclear agreement - "we do see them debating among themselves as they've failed to realize the economic benefits they hoped for from the deal".

Mark Warner of Virginia, the senior Democrat on the Senate's intelligence panel, also expressed displeasure with Trump's comments.

The report also said Iran was not developing nuclear weapons, as the Trump administration has said, prompting a tweet from the president telling the intelligence heads to "go back to school". "When I became President Iran was making trouble all over the Middle East, and beyond". And the number of those have doubled over the past three or four years, and nearly all of them. lead back to China. Be careful of Iran.

Soon after his Twitter outburst, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the President and called on Coats to stage an intervention with the President.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed on Wednesday that the meeting will be "someplace in Asia", while a USA official had previously told ABC News that they are zeroing in one of three cities in Vietnam - Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Nang.

'President Trump's criticism of the testimony you and other intelligence leaders provided to Congress yesterday was extraordinarily inappropriate, ' Schumer wrote to Coats.

Coats was being interviewed on stage at a security conference in July when he seemed astonished as host Andrea Mitchell, of NBC, told him the White House planned to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to Washington in the coming months.

A day after ridiculing his top intelligence officials as "passive and naive" and claiming they were ignorant about world affairs, President Trump on Thursday said the media had fabricated a conflict and that the officials were "misquoted" by the press after a public congressional hearing that was carried live on television. A 2nd Trump-Kim meeting is expected in February.

Coats appeared to contradict that when he said Tehran was complying with the deal - even after Trump announced America's withdrawal from it in May.

Coats said "we do not believe Iran is now undertaking the key activities we judge necessary to produce a nuclear device", even though the regime has "publicly threatened to push the boundaries" of the nuclear agreement if they determine there's no benefits under it.

"To trot them into the Oval Office for this photo shoot today during the intelligence briefing and then to have the president say that they said that it was fake news, that is not language that Gina or Director Coats uses". I think as time goes by and the President has already mentioned some of the things that happened in that meeting, I think we will learn more.

The President did not provide examples of the areas the intelligence chiefs said they were misquoted.
