Trump to Call on Democrats to ‘Heal,’ and Bashes Pelosi Over Wall

"And when I hear them talking about the fact that walls are immoral, walls don't work - they know they work", Trump said.

McConnell, R-Ky., told Trump that Congress might end up passing a resolution disapproving the emergency declaration, the people said - which would force the president to contemplate issuing his first veto ever, in face of opposition from his own party. "She's - she's costing the country hundreds of billions of dollars because what's happening is when you have a porous border, and when you have drugs pouring in, and when you have people dying all over the country because of people like Nancy Pelosi who don't want to give proper border security for political reasons, she's doing a awful disservice to our country". Democrats have proposed billions of dollars for border security, but no money for a wall.

Timothy Ballard, CEO of Operation Underground Railroad and Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen listen as President Trump speaks during an event on human trafficking in the Cabinet Room of the White House, Feb. 1, 2019, in Washington.

"We haven't declared the national emergency yet, but we're building the wall", the president said.

"But we will be looking at a national emergency, because I don't think anything is going to happen", Trump said.

"I think there's a good chance that we'll have to do that".

"We're in a very strong legal standing - we are doing it regardless". The president - in open warfare with opposition Democrats, as well as railing nearly daily against prosecutors looking at allegations that he colluded with Russian Federation in his 2016 election - will take the high ground, the official said. The official said he was instructed not to say whether any other specific countries would be mentioned.

The president repeated his assertion that without a border wall the United States is subject to vast lawlessness, including "human trafficking ... drugs and gangs and criminals pouring in".

Trump continued that Pelosi's refusal to fund his border wall is causing deaths "all over the country".

"But we've sent 2,500 military down to help Border Patrol and law enforcement".

"We've certainly tried to communicate that to him", said Cornyn, referring to Trump.

Meanwhile, Pelosi's office accused Trump of making reckless remarks.

"The President's wild and predictable misrepresentations about Democrats' commitment to border security do nothing to make our country safer", she said. "It's going to be part of their campaign, but I don't think it's good politically", Trump said about the Democrats on the committee. "When you see today what's going on, people that aren't willing to do what they have to do, and they know what they have to do, they're doing the country a tremendous disservice".
